The Annoying Sleepwalker Chapter 20
“And this is the recording from last night where she admitted she intentionally damaged property out of jealousy.”
“At present, the student life office’s position is this:”
“She must compensate for all losses, post a public clarification and apology,”
“accept a formal disciplinary action, move out of the room, and undergo a psychological evaluation.”
Blair’s mother immediately panicked.
“Isn’t that too harsh?”
“It’s just some broken things, isn’t it?”
I looked up at her.
“*Just*?”
I put the repair estimate for my laptop on the table.
“Fifteen hundred for the repair. Eight hundred and forty for data recovery.”
“Because of the data loss, I stayed up for two nights rebuilding my project.”
“The first thing she destroyed was my laptop.”
“The second time, she destroyed Tessa’s iPad and Mallory’s headphones and mirror.”
“And the school’s camera.”
“She also lied about me on Yik Yak, claiming I set her up and bullied her.”
“Which one of those is *just* a broken thing to you?”
Blair’s mother’s face went from pale to flushed.
Tessa pushed forward the repair diagnostic for her iPad, too.
“My screen and motherboard are both damaged. I also have to reload everything that was on it.”
Mallory opened her Amazon order page.
“The headphones can’t be fixed. The mirror is totaled. She pays the replacement cost.”
Genevieve submitted the repair estimate for the camera on behalf of the floor.
Blair’s father was silent for a long time before forcing out the question:
“How much is the total?”
Ms. Albright answered,
“At present, the total is five thousand, five hundred and seventy dollars.”
“If there are further data recovery costs for the laptop, those will be added based on the final receipts.”
Blair’s mother sucked in a sharp breath.
“That much? Why are students using such expensive things?”
Mallory nearly slammed her hand on the table.
“So if it’s expensive, your daughter just gets to smash it?”
Tessa snapped, too.
“Yesterday, when your daughter was pretending to be sick and asking us to be understanding, why weren’t you saying that then?”
