I Married His Enemy The Day He Married His Mistress Chapter 04
The Broken Vase
The reply from the West Side came fast.
“Five days. The dowry is ready.”
Five days. That was Leo’s birthday.
Adrian went all out for the party. Decorations, caterers, the whole production.
But his men kept glancing at me funny every time I walked past. Nervous looks, whispered conversations that died the second I entered a room.
They knew what was coming. I wasn’t supposed to.
The night before the party, Vivienne walked into the dining room wearing a wedding dress.
“Donna Locke, I’m so sorry. I got lost. I didn’t mean to come in here.” She pressed a hand to her chest. “Adrian told me to take a walk after my dress fitting. I just ended up here by accident.”
I looked at her. “If you’re lost, then get out. My gun won’t miss a second time.”
Her face went white. She grabbed fistfuls of the skirt and turned to leave, but the train was too long. It swept across the shelf behind her and knocked the vase off its stand.
It shattered on the floor.
She screamed. Adrian’s voice came from the doorway immediately, like he’d been waiting right outside. “Vivienne, what are you doing here? Come on, let’s go back.”
He rushed in, glanced at me and Leo, then grabbed Vivienne’s arm to pull her away.
I stared at the broken pieces on the ground.
My mother’s vase. The only thing she left me.
“Stop.” My voice cut through the room. “Who said you could leave?”
Old Marco stepped forward. “Miss Sinclair, that vase belonged to our late Donna. It was the most precious thing Madam owns.”
Vivienne’s face drained of color. She stammered. “I… I didn’t mean to… I didn’t know it was some dead woman’s unlucky…”
Adrian squeezed her hand. “Sienna, what’s your point? You’re really going to start something over a vase?”
“Yes,” I said. “That’s exactly what I’m going to do.”
Adrian scoffed. “I said no. I dare anyone to touch her.”
Old Marco reached for his gun. Adrian was faster.
The shot hit Marco’s wrist. His pistol clattered to the floor. Blood sprayed across the tiles.
And then Adrian’s gun was pointed at me.
“Sienna. You wanna try me too?”
So this is what it feels like. To have a gun aimed at you by the man you once loved.
Marco dropped to his knees, clutching his wrist, blood seeping between his fingers. “Madam…”
I said nothing.
Adrian waited. When I didn’t move, he took it as surrender. He pulled Vivienne close and walked out.
…
Five days later, the West Side’s convoy rolled through the Locke gates in a long line of black cars.
But the birthday party was already underway.
Adrian’s own wedding gifts for Vivienne were being delivered at the same time, through the same front door.
Nobody noticed the extra cars.
I held Leo on my arm and walked down the second-floor staircase, along the red carpet, straight out the front door, and into the Vale car waiting at the curb.
Before I got in, I turned to Old Marco, his wrist still wrapped in bandages.
“Send the order. Every Locke soldier moves with me. Now.”
He nodded.
Downstairs, Vivienne stood in her wedding dress, clinking glasses with Adrian. Laughter, music, champagne.
The party went on. I never appeared.
It took Adrian until the end of the night to notice.
He sent someone to my room.
But the man came running back.
“Boss! Donna is gone!”
Adrian turned around and glared at him.
“Say that again. What do you mean she’s GONE!? I’m throwing Leo a birthday party. Sienna would be thrilled. No way she’d miss it. She’s hiding somewhere, waiting for me to come find her.”
“Boss!” Another man burst through the doors, shouting. “The Locke soldiers are all gone! Someone outside said Madam took Leo and got into a car headed for the West Side!”
