I Married His Enemy The Day He Married His Mistress Chapter 02
The Girl in the White Dress
I didn’t turn around. My voice came out calm. Unnervingly calm. “Just now.”
Adrian exhaled behind me. Relief.
He walked up and wrapped his arms around me from behind, his chin dropping to my shoulder, voice low and warm. “Baby, I’ll come to you tonight. These three years, I thought about you every single night.”
I didn’t move. Didn’t answer.
He stiffened. His voice turned careful. “Sienna? What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy that I’m home?”
I was about to push him off when a soft voice floated out from behind us.
Vivienne pressed one hand to her lips, coughing delicately. “Mrs. Locke, you’re here? I haven’t been feeling well, so Adrian came to check on me. Please don’t be mad at him.”
The second he heard her voice, Adrian let go of me. His brow creased with worry as he turned. “It’s windy out here. Why’d you come outside?”
Vivienne walked toward us, all fragile grace. “I heard Mrs. Locke’s voice. I just wanted to say hello.” She looked at me, eyes wide and earnest. “Please don’t mind. He’s always been like this, fussing over me. Three years on the road, he took care of me. It’s just our habit.”
She looked so sincere.
I stared at her pale face and smiled. “The Locke Family can afford an extra human. But we don’t keep trash.”
Her smile froze.
Adrian’s jaw clenched. “Sienna. Watch your mouth.”
I met his eyes, unbothered. “I’ve always been difficult. Isn’t that what you love about me?”
He swallowed, about to argue, but Vivienne swayed against the doorframe, her voice thin and wounded. “Donna Locke, I know you don’t like me. But I’ve never tried to take anything from you. I’m just too weak. I need Adrian to look after me. He watches over me day and night, so I understand if you’re upset.” She pressed her hand to her chest. “If you want me gone, I’ll go.”
She turned and stumbled away, fast, unsteady.
Adrian shot me a look like I’d slapped him, then chased after her. “Vivienne, stop! Your body can’t handle this! I run this Family now, and you don’t have to listen to a word she says! Vivienne!”
They ran toward the courtyard corner. And right as Vivienne rounded the turn, Leo came toddling out from the other side. He slammed straight into her legs.
She screamed. Her feet slipped and she hit the ground hard.
Adrian caught her in his arms.
She pulled up the hem of her skirt. Blood ran down her shin.
Adrian’s head snapped toward Leo, his face dark with fury. “Who told you to run around like that? Get out of my sight!”
Leo burst into tears. “Mama… I want Mama…”
I was already running. I pulled him behind me, crouched down, held his face in my hands. “It’s okay, baby. Mama’s here. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
Nanny Rosa came rushing up behind us, out of breath. “Madam, Leo was crying for you. I couldn’t hold him back…”
I kept my voice flat. “It’s fine. Not your fault. Everyone in this house has always known where to look.”
Adrian turned his glare on me. “This is how you raise a child? No wonder he has no manners!”
Vivienne leaned against him, her voice barely above a whisper. “Adrian, don’t. Leo’s just a baby. Don’t scare him. I only fell, that’s all. I’m used to getting hurt.”
Then she looked at me, eyes brimming with sorrow. “Donna Locke, it’s my fault. I understand why you are angry. I lost my mind and bumped into him. Let me apologize.”
She struggled to stand, pushing herself out of Adrian’s arms, and cried out in pain the second she moved.
Adrian pulled her back, his voice raw. “What are you apologizing for? I’m the one who failed as a father.” He looked at me and Leo like we were strangers. “Sienna, I wasn’t around before, so I’ll let the past slide. But you’re the mother. This is on you. I don’t trust you with him anymore. Vivienne’s here now. She’s kind. She’s patient. She’ll raise him right.”
My blood went cold. “…what the hell are you saying?”
Adrian replied without looking, “I’m saying— Leo stays with Vivienne from now on. You just focus on being the Locke princess.”
I stepped out. It was really hard to control my palm not slapping him on his face. “You must be out of your goddamn mind.”
His voice turned to steel. “I’m the head of this Family. I have every right. And he’s my son.”
He set Vivienne down, then grabbed Leo by the arm, dragging him forward. “A man has to make up to the mistakes he made. Now kneel and apologize to Auntie Vivienne.”
He pressed down on Leo’s tiny shoulders, forcing him toward the ground.
Leo screamed. “No! I want Mama! Mama!”
