The Girl I Fed For Five Years Stole My Fiancé Chapter 05
He Realizes She’s Gone
(Kane’s POV)
Three days later.
I’m parked on a bench in the hallway of Central City Hospital.
Three days. Ronnie’s phone is off. She’s not answering texts.
I told myself she was just throwing a tantrum. Give her a couple days of cold shoulder and she’ll come crawling back, apologizing like always.
But it’s been three whole days now. Radio silence.
Something in my gut starts twisting.
Mia comes out of the exam room holding a paper. She’s chewing her lip, watching my face like she’s about to get slapped.
“Kane.”
“Doctor said it’s just a bad stomach bug. I’m… I’m not pregnant.”
My jaw tightens. Weirdly, I feel relieved. Then furious.
“Then what the hell were you screaming about your stomach for?”
“You had me thinking you were losing a baby!”
Her eyes well up. She drops her head.
“I don’t know what happened, it just really hurt…”
“Ronnie was so scary, I thought she was going to kill me…”
Ronnie’s name. My chest tightens.
I stand up, already walking.
“Enough. Stop crying.”
“I’m going to check on Grandma. Ronnie’s probably still glued to that bed. She owes you an apology this time. She went too far.”
I get to Grandma’s room. Push the door open.
There’s some strange middle-aged guy in the bed.
I freeze. Grab the first nurse walking past.
“Where’s the old lady who was in this room? And the young woman who was sitting with her?”
The nurse stops.
“You mean the elderly patient from three days ago? She didn’t make it. Passed away that same night.”
Something explodes inside my skull.
“What the hell are you talking about?!”
“She was healthy! She was fine!”
The nurse’s face hardens.
“Why would I lie? Our doctors worked on her for over half an hour. Couldn’t bring her back.”
“A young woman named Sanders signed the death certificate. She didn’t even leave the body in the morgue—she called the funeral home that same night and had her cremated.”
The rest of what the nurse says—I don’t hear a word.
My pupils are shaking. My phone slips out of my hand and cracks on the tile.
“That’s… that’s not possible…”
I mutter it to myself. My legs stop working. I drop to my knees right there in the middle of the hallway.
Mia rushes over, trying to prop me up.
“Kane, don’t be like this. It’s not your fault the old lady was already sick—”
I snap. I shove her off me. Hard.
“Get OFF me!”
Mia hits the floor. She stares up at me, stunned.
“Kane, you pushed me…”
I don’t even glance at her.
I scramble up and stagger out of the hospital like a crazy person.
I drive straight home.
The entryway is empty. The engagement photos are gone from the wall.
My heart drops through the floor.
I run to the bedroom. Yank open the closet. Only my clothes are left. Every single thing of Ronnie’s—gone. Cleaned out.
“Ronnie…”
“Ronnie, come out!”
“Come on, this isn’t funny anymore!”
I collapse onto the couch and grip my head in my hands.
That’s when I see it out of the corner of my eye. Something on the coffee table.
I pick it up with shaking fingers. Read the header. My pupils shrink to pinpricks.
Grandma Rose’s death certificate.
A raw, animal sound rips out of my throat.
“AHHHHH!!!”
I did this.
I killed the woman who treated me like her own grandson.
I destroyed everything Ronnie had.
Then the front door beeps—fingerprint unlock.
Mia walks in. She flinches at the sight of me, but immediately shifts to that soft, gooey voice.
“Kane, honey, what’s wrong?”
“Look at you, you’re a mess…”
She glides over and reaches for my arm.
“Baby, please. I know you’re hurting.”
“Ronnie’s already gone. Let her go. You still have me. I’ll always be here for you…”
I snap my head up and kick her clean off me.
“GET. OUT.”
“Get out of my house!”
“I never want to see your disgusting face again!”
Mia slams into the floor.
She was gearing up for another round of pathetic sobbing—but she sees my eyes and finally figures it out. The fragile-little-victim act is dead.
The mask cracks. And what’s underneath is ugly.
“Kane Griffin, what is your PROBLEM?!”
“YOU’RE the one who couldn’t keep it in your pants!”
“YOU’RE the one who begged me and said you loved me!”
“Now something goes wrong and suddenly it’s all MY fault? You’re gonna hit me too?!”
She shoves herself up and jabs a finger in my face, screaming.
“That idiot Ronnie deserved to get played!”
“Waving her money around like it made her royalty?”
“I wanted to take every damn thing from her, and I DID!”
I watch her spit rage across my living room and it hits me like ice water.
This. This is the woman I threw everything away for.
I stand up. My eyes are bloodshot.
“Take your stuff and get out of Ronnie’s and my house. Right now.”
“Or I call the cops. Fraud. Extortion. Take your pick.”
“Try me. I’ll make sure you pay back every cent Ronnie ever gave you, with interest. I’ll bleed you dry.”
Real fear finally hits Mia’s eyes.
She knows what I’m capable of. If I come after her, she’s finished.
She shoots me a look full of pure hate, scrambles up, and bolts out of the apartment.
The door slams. The place goes silent again.
