He Saved Her Seat Not Our Baby Chapter 06

“You did sign it.” Ethan’s voice was low.

Lily’s face went white. “I was just worried we’d miss the launch. Legal said a proxy signature was fine.”

Ethan slowly pulled his arm free. “Who told you to take the medication?”

“It wasn’t me. Your assistant saw I was in pain and went to get it on his own.”

The assistant, standing behind the officers, jumped in. “Mr. Ward, Ms. Scott showed me your message. You said she couldn’t be exposed to any risk—that all resources should go to her first.”

Ethan said coldly: “I was talking about project resources.”

“But Ms. Scott said it included medical resources.”

Tears spilled down Lily’s face. “Ethan, I was so scared. I didn’t know Claire was worse off than me. I had no idea the baby wouldn’t make it.”

I pressed the call button.

When the nurse came in, I said: “Please ask them to leave.”

Ethan turned back to me.

“Claire, I’ll get to the bottom of this.”

“It has nothing to do with me anymore.”

“How can it have nothing to do with you? That was my child too.”

I looked at the silver airplane in his palm.

“So what?”

He had no answer.

I had waited seven years. Waiting had never brought results.

Ethan left a lawyer behind and took Lily to the police office.

That night, he came back to the room.

In his hand, the silver airplane, repaired.

“I had someone restore it.” He placed the pendant on the bedside table. “For the future. When we have another child, it can still go on the crib.”

I swept it off with the back of my hand. The silver airplane struck the corner of the cabinet and rolled to a stop against his shoe.

“There won’t be a future.”

Ethan bent down, picked it up, ran his thumb along the wing. “You used to say you wanted a baby that looked like me.”

“Back then I didn’t know what looking like you would mean.”

His shoulders locked.

“I’ve already removed Lily from the project. I’ve canceled all her positions at Ward Group. If the medication incident traces back to her, I won’t protect her.”

“Mr. Ward’s staffing decisions don’t require my input.”

“She’s not someone I have feelings for.”

He finally offered this belated explanation.

“I looked after her because her father saved my life. I thought giving her the best of everything was how I repaid the Scott family.”

I asked: “Then what do you have to repay me?”

Ethan opened his mouth.

I didn’t wait for the answer.

“When I was bleeding at the airport, you said I was disrupting your schedule. When I was lying here, you took my medication. When the baby died, you told me we’d have another one. Ethan, not everything can be replaced.”

His eyes went red all at once.

“Give me one chance.”

“I gave you four.”

The first time, I waited at the Maldives gate until midnight.

The second time, I finished my prenatal exam alone, then packed his bags for the spa trip.

The third time, I braced myself against the wall to stand, and watched his car drive away with Lily inside.

The fourth time, our baby waited for him for seventy-three minutes.

Each time quieter than the last.

Each time more final.
