He Saved Her Seat Not Our Baby Chapter 05

Inside, the heart monitor let out one long, flat tone.

The little silver airplane in my palm was pried open, finger by finger, by the doctor.

When I woke, Ethan was sitting beside the bed.

His head was bowed. In his hand, the deformed little airplane.

“Claire, I didn’t know about the medication.”

I stared at the ceiling. No response.

“My assistant told me Lily had abdominal pain. The doctor recommended transferring those two doses to her. I assumed your hospital had enough in stock.”

He took my hand. “Why didn’t you tell me it was this serious?”

I pulled away. My wrist had almost no strength—it only shifted an inch.

But that small movement seemed to cut him. His knuckles went white.

“I’ve already halted the launch. I’m having people look into the hospital’s liability. We can have another child. Just focus on recovering.”

“Ethan Ward.”

This was the first time I had spoken since waking.

His eyes flickered with light.

“I’m here.”

“I gave the divorce papers to Noah. Don’t forget to sign.”

He went still for several seconds.

“What?”

“The baby is gone. The Cloud Cabin authorization was forged. The only things left between us are the divorce and the infringement claim.”

“You’re not in a stable state right now. We’ll talk when you’re discharged.”

“There’s nothing to wait for.”

“Claire, losing the baby hurts me too.”

“At 9:17, there was no heartbeat.”

Ethan’s face drained of color.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

I turned to look at him.

“At nine, you were with Lily for her exam. At 9:10, your assistant took my medication. At 9:17, our baby died.”

His lips moved.

“At ten, you arrived on schedule to ask if I was still making a scene.”

“Stop.”

“Your schedule was perfect. Not a single minute wasted.”

Ethan’s eyes went red in an instant.

“I said stop.”

I didn’t say another word.

The door opened. Noah walked in with a lawyer.

“Mr. Ward, here is the divorce agreement, the intellectual property dispute notice, and the evidence preservation order regarding the forged authorization signature.”

Ethan blocked the bed.

“Who let you in here?”

“I called him,” I said.

Noah placed the documents on the bedside table.

“Claire has revoked Ward Group’s license to use Cloud Cabin. All footage and promotional materials from the launch must be taken down within twenty-four hours.”

Ethan’s voice was ice.

“The project was jointly operated by husband and wife.”

The lawyer replied calmly: “The core design was completed before the marriage. The original manuscript belongs to Ms. Miller’s mother. Ward Group holds only a limited-term usage license, not naming rights.”

Ethan looked at me.

“You’ve been preparing all this?”

“Since the airport.”

“So when you called Noah, it wasn’t just to have someone with you for the surgery?”

“At least he showed up.”

Noah handed me a new phone.

“The transfer and housing are arranged. The doctor says you can move in a week. Southport, for recovery.”

Ethan snatched the phone away.

“She’s not going anywhere. She just had surgery. She needs her family.”

I looked at him. “I don’t have family.”

His breath caught.

I held out my hand, my voice quiet. “Mr. Ward, please give me my phone back.”

Ethan stared at me for a long time. Finally, he set the phone back in my palm.

Outside the room, officers were showing credentials to his assistant.

“Regarding the forged signature and the unauthorized acquisition of prescription medication, please cooperate with the investigation.”

Lily’s crying came from the corridor immediately after.

She burst in and grabbed Ethan’s sleeve.

“Ethan, help me! They’re saying I signed that authorization. They want to take me in for questioning!”
