My Boss Made Me Sext Her Billionaire Fiancé Chapter 07

The Bunny in the Bushes

Xander is not easy to fix.

I go all-out. “Baby” this, “baby” that. Three days straight of the sweetest, most pathetic groveling texts I can churn out.

Finally, he replies.

Four words: “Cut him off. Completely.”

I swear up and down it’s already done.

He goes silent again.

I sit on my bed staring at the ceiling. Grandma’s surgery is in two weeks. I cannot lose this.

So I do the dumbest, sweetest thing I can think of.

I buy yarn and a crochet hook. YouTube tutorial.

Two nights of stabbing my fingers and cursing at knots.

I finish a lumpy, crooked, absolutely ridiculous little bunny with mismatched ears and paws pressed together like it’s begging *sorry*.

I hold it up. It’s ugly. It’s also kind of adorable.

I stuff it in a gift bag and Uber to Xander’s penthouse building.

I wait downstairs. Freezing. Wind cutting through my jacket. Twenty minutes.

He finally comes down, hands in his pockets, jaw tight.

He sees me and stops. Frowns.

“You? What are you doing here?”

I hold up the bag.

“Nina was scared you wouldn’t see her. She asked me to drop this off.”

He takes it. Slow.

He pulls the bunny out. Turns it over in his hands.

His face — just for a second — softens. His thumb brushes one of the crooked ears.

Then he catches me watching.

The softness snaps shut.

“Ugly.” He tosses it — tosses my bunny — into the bushes next to the driveway.

“Tell Nina one crappy stuffed animal isn’t fixing this.”

He turns and walks back inside.

I stand there for a minute. Then I sigh, pull out my phone flashlight, and go dig through the bushes.

Two nights of work. Ten bucks of yarn. I’m not leaving it out here.

I find it. Brush the dirt off its ears. Sit down on the curb, hugging it, and try to figure out my next move.

What the hell do you get a billionaire who has everything?

I’ve been sitting there ten minutes when I hear footsteps.

Xander. Back downstairs. Flashlight on his phone. Looking through the bushes.

His light swings.

Catches me.

We lock eyes.

He freezes.

I stand up slowly. My nose is red from the cold. My eyes are watering.

I hold out the bunny.

“Were you… looking for this?”

Xander’s throat moves. He stares at me for way too long.

Something weird flickers across his face. I can’t read it.

Then his jaw sets.

He snatches the bunny out of my hand.

“You’re just an assistant. Don’t ask questions that aren’t yours to ask.”

He storms back inside. Bunny in hand.

I stand there in the cold, blinking.

What the hell just happened?
