My Boss Made Me Sext Her Billionaire Fiancé Chapter 06

Grandma Saves My Ass

My heart stops.

Xander’s head snaps up.

I fake-swipe my screen, press it to my ear, and duck into the corner like I’m taking a real call.

“Hey, yeah, hi—”

Behind me, Xander stares at his own phone. The line’s ringing. Nobody’s picking up.

His eyebrow twitches.

I keep my back to him. Talking to nobody. Sweating through my shirt.

Then his voice, right behind me:

“Who are you on the phone with?”

I jump. Words won’t come.

He doesn’t wait. He just reaches over my shoulder and *takes my phone*.

Every hair on my body stands up.

He looks at the screen.

The screen shows a contact.

Grandma — Call in Progress — 00:47

And a scratchy, sweet old-lady voice comes through the speaker:

“Sweetheart? You still there? Did the call drop?”

I look up at Xander. Cool as ice.

“Something you need?”

He stares at the screen for one more beat.

Then hands the phone back.

“No. Car’s here. Get in.”

He walks off toward the curb.

I press the phone to my ear. “Grandma, I’ll call you back. Love you.”

I hang up. My knees almost give out.

Back in my pocket, the burner has one silent notification: Missed call — Xander.

Auto-ended, because he hung up on his end.

Thank God for Grandma.

The next few weeks fall into a rhythm.

Nina keeps making me chat with Xander. Turns out Mr. Cold-and-Distant is a total clingy boyfriend behind the screen. Good morning texts. Good night texts. Reply within two minutes or he pouts. Wants to FaceTime. Wants dates.

Every time he wants a date, I tell Nina. She dolls up. She goes. She comes back and complains he’s “boring.”

Until one Saturday.

I text her: “He wants to see you tonight.”

She texts back: “Can’t. Going to Marco’s gig. Blow him off. Say I’m sick or whatever.”

I sigh and lie to Xander.

He’s not happy. But he lets it go.

I work a double shift. Bakery in the morning, cleaning gig at a bar at night. I drag myself home at 11 p.m., dead on my feet.

My phone rings. Nina. Panicked.

“Lindy — Lindy, I screwed up. Xander saw me at Marco’s show tonight.”

My stomach drops.

“He’s ignoring me. Won’t answer my texts, won’t pick up—”

“So call him yourself. He’s your fiancé.”

“You have to fix this. My dad hasn’t signed the Shaw deal yet. LINDY. You fixed it before; you can fix it now, right?!”

I close my eyes. My whole body aches.

“Nina, I have no idea how to fix this.”

Silence. Then, softer. Snakier.

“Your grandma’s surgery is coming up, right? Big-name surgeon?”

I go still.

“Fun fact, Lindy. That surgeon? He’s my uncle.”

My throat locks.

“What are you saying?”

She laughs. Light. Bright. Poison.

“Fix this for me, and I’ll make sure Grandma’s surgery goes *perfect*. I’ll cover her medical bills. All of it. Sound good?”

My hand tightens on the phone until my knuckles go white.

A long silence.

Then I hear myself say it.

“Fine. I’ll do it.”
