He Watched Me Die Twice Chapter 05
The helicopter door slid open.
A figure stepped out, silhouetted against the harsh light. It was Martha.
Decked out in a pristine white Chanel suit and flawless makeup, she looked completely out of place against the blood-soaked deck.
She walked straight over to Damian, looped her arm through his, and flashed me a smile.
“Didn’t see this coming, did you, dear sister?”
Two cartel guys had me pinned to the freezing metal deck.
I was soaked to the bone, rain and blood stinging my eyes.
The version of me on the screen looked totally blindsided.
It took me a few agonizing seconds to process what was happening. When I finally found my voice, I forced out every single word.
“Why?”
Martha leaned in, her red-painted nails digging into my chin. She squeezed hard enough to make my jaw pop.
Her voice was deceptively soft.
“Why? You really have the nerve to ask me that?
“Brianna, I had a perfect life as the Davy family’s daughter.
“The second you showed up, I was reduced to the despised daughter of a drug lord.
“You officially rejoined the family, and your very first move was to rat out our father to the cops. You ruined my life.”
The screen flashed white.
The scene shifted back to the night before the family reunion dinner.
Inside the study, I had spread all the evidence I’d gathered across Dad’s desk.
“Dad, turn yourself in,” I begged. “These drugs have ruined too many lives. You have to stop.”
He swept the papers off the desk, his eyes bloodshot.
“You don’t understand a damn thing,” he snapped. “This business is the lifeblood of the Davy family.
“I brought you back so you could live a comfortable life, not so you could tear this family apart.”
Tears welled in my eyes, my voice shaking.
“Dad, think about the body count. These are human beings.”
We were practically shouting. Out in the hallway, a slender shadow slipped past the crack of the partially open door.
It was Martha.
The playback slammed back to the cargo ship.
Martha smirked.
“I noticed you acting sketchy a long time ago. Did you honestly think you were hiding it?
“I was standing right outside the door the day you went at it with Dad. I heard every single word.”
Back in the real world, the crowd in the square went ballistic.
A beat of stunned silence immediately gave way to furious shouting.
“Oh my god. Brianna was the one who turned her dad in, and Martha betrayed her.”
“Martha is a monster. She’s been lying to us this entire time.”
Martha’s face drained of color.
Shaking her head frantically, she screamed at Jonathan. “It’s fake! Jonah, it’s a lie! She forged these memories before she died! Don’t believe it!”
Jonathan ripped his hand away from hers, stumbling backward.
Panic flashed across Martha’s face. She lunged for the console, desperate to kill the video feed.
“Stop looking!” she screamed. “I said stop! She set this whole thing up!”
A couple of officers immediately stepped in and grabbed her.
The crowd turned on Martha in a heartbeat, shouting and repeatedly calling her a bitch. The uproar quickly drowned out her screams.
Jonathan didn’t say a word.
He just stared at the screen, clenching his fists so hard his knuckles popped.
