He Watched Me Die Twice Chapter 06
He was completely glued to the footage playing out in front of him.
The video showed exactly what had gone down on the cargo ship.
Up on the screen, Martha was clinging to Damian’s arm, looking down at me with a vicious smirk.
“Brianna, you’re so naive,” she said.
“Did you honestly think I wouldn’t notice what you were pulling?”
She pulled a voice recorder out of her Hermès bag and shoved it in my face.
“You used those kids to guide us, deliberately leading one of them straight into a police ambush. Did you really think nobody would find out?
“And that flash drive you gave me had all the evidence.”
Then Damian spoke. He brought his boot down hard on my hand — the same hand that had been mauled by a mastiff — and ground his heel into it.
I groaned, my whole body shaking violently.
Damian let out a booming laugh. “Brianna, if it wasn’t for Marty, you would’ve had me completely fooled.
“I kept wondering how the cops always managed to beat us there. Turns out, the rat was working right alongside me the whole time.”
He crouched down, yanked me up by my hair, and forced me to look at him.
“Tell me. Who else on this ship is working with you?”
I spat bloody saliva right in his face.
“I’ll never tell you.”
“I gave you a chance,” he said. “Since you won’t talk, I’ll find them myself.”
Damian turned to Martha.
She stepped right up and pointed at the captured narcotics officers, calling them out one by one.
“He’s the new undercover. His name is Fletcher Hales,” she said.
“And him — we know him. Karter Lewin.
“Oh, and the young kid… I think he’s Jonathan’s junior officer. What was his name again? Whatever, it doesn’t matter.”
As she named each guy, Damian’s thugs dragged him forward.
The sharp, heavy sound of guns chambering rounds cut right through the rain. A cold dread hit my stomach.
The men opened fire.
Exactly thirteen shots rang out.
Thirteen men dropped to the deck right in front of me, bleeding out.
The rain washed over their warm blood, sending thick, dark red streams sliding across the metal deck.
I watched the whole thing happen. My chest tightened with an agonizing ache, and I couldn’t catch my breath.
Now, as a spirit hovering in the air, I watched Jonathan in the present.
All the color had drained from his face.
He swayed, barely able to stay on his feet.
Back on the screen, Martha clicked over to me in her high heels.
She crouched down, dabbing the rain off my face with a handkerchief.
“Brianna, you must absolutely hate me right now,” she said softly.
“But I love watching you suffer.”
She leaned in close to my ear, dropping her voice to a whisper so only we could hear.
“I paid that woman who kicked you in the stomach the other day. I told her to make sure you miscarried.
“I wanted you to feel the pain of losing the thing you care about most.
“You destroyed my family, so I destroyed your life. It’s only fair, don’t you think?”
She stood back up, and just like that, her face shifted right back into a look of helpless innocence.
She walked over and wrapped herself around Damian’s arm, her voice suddenly high and girlish.
“Mr. Felton, she won’t talk. You should just cut her tongue out. Looking at her annoys me.”
Damian pinched her cheek.
“Alright, we’ll do what you want.”
He gave his men a nod, and someone handed him a knife.
He pressed the cold steel right under my chin.
I squeezed my eyes shut.
Then, Martha spoke up again.
“Wait.”
