Revenge On My Feet Chapter 08

When he spoke again, his tone was exactly what it had always been: commanding.

“Buy a plane ticket back to Boston tomorrow, and I’ll drop this.”

“If the Bellini job is gone, it’s gone. It’s not like I can’t find another one.”

“Come back, and we’ll go to interviews together.”

“If you don’t like me bringing Renata around, I won’t bring her anymore.”

“If that’s not good enough, I’ll start my own company. My family will help me.”

“You just need to stay by my side, like before.”

“You, more than anyone, should understand your own limitations.”

I stood at the break room window, listening to him, and every ounce of pain and humiliation I’d ever endured came flooding back.

I spoke into the phone.

“Desmond, what do you think I am?”

“A pet you can call over when you want and kick away when you don’t?”

“I’m telling you now, I have the ability to stay at WU, and I have the ability to do my job well.”

“Don’t ever use my body to diminish me again. I’m not coming back.”

“And you and I are done.”

His voice crackled on the other end, as though he was about to argue.

I hung up.

A few minutes later, a text from Dr. Prescott came through.

“Nadia, I’m so sorry. I didn’t expect it to go like that.”

“I thought you two could at least talk things through.”

“If you don’t want him to, I won’t let him contact you again.”

I took a deep breath and replied,

“Thank you. Please don’t let Desmond contact me again.”

Dr. Prescott replied quickly.

“Understood. I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”
