Revenge On My Feet Chapter 07
The days at Whitfield Union flew past.
The pace was relentless, and the senior staff demanding.
I shadowed them on projects, wrote reports, sat in on client meetings, and slowly learned to run pieces of the work on my own.
In time, I began leading small projects independently.
Every so often, old college classmates would reach out, asking where I’d disappeared to.
In their eyes, someone like me was lucky to land any job at all, let alone a spot at a major firm in New York.
In the alumni group chat, some guessed I’d gone home to live with my parents. Others figured I was doing remote gig work.
I skimmed the messages a couple of times, then left the group.
The people and events of the past no longer had any hold on me.
I thought my ties to Boston were all but cut.
Then I got a call from Dr. Prescott.
At first, I assumed there was some issue with paperwork from the university.
But the second I answered, Desmond’s voice exploded down the line.
“Nadia, you’re really in New York?”
“Why would you go to New York before graduation without saying a word?”
“Who gave you the right to make a decision that big without talking to me?”
“And that report to Bellini Capital—was that you?”
“Renata and I both lost our jobs. Are you happy now?”
He was shouting from the other end.
I held the phone a few inches from my ear. When he finally ran out of steam, I spoke calmly.
“I wouldn’t say I’m happy.”
“But what you and Renata did to me over the years was far worse than this.”
The other end of the line went quiet.
