After He Blinded Me The Don Begged For Forgiveness Chapter 10
His breathing was heavy.
He didn’t smash anything.
He only walked, slowly, deliberately, taking every gift Serena had ever given him from his study—a Cuban cigar box, a diamond-inlaid Beretta, a bottle of 1962 Barolo—and placing them, one by one, into the fireplace.
The firelight flickered across his face. His expression was as calm as if he were performing a Mass.
After a long while, he walked over to me.
His trembling fingers traced over my eyes. He didn’t say a word.
That night, I heard he had personally led men down to a stronghold on the Mexican border and brought Serena back.
He froze all her offshore accounts in the Caymans and in Switzerland.
He transferred every property and asset that belonged to her and her sons back to the Costello family.
He had Serena bound and dumped in the estate’s drawing room.
He drove his foot into her ribs.
Serena grunted, then let out a soft laugh.
“What’s the use of kicking me?”
“Do you think she’ll ever forgive you?”
“Do you know? Dr. Romano burned through her retinas with industrial acid. Just hearing about it sounds painful.”
She coughed up blood, and still she laughed.
“Shut up!”
Soren rushed forward and struck her, gripping her chin hard.
“It was all you!”
“If it weren’t for you! My Caroline wouldn’t be dead!”
He clenched his fist and raised it to strike again.
“Daddy, don’t hurt Mommy.”
“Yes, Mommy’s hurt. Daddy, please take Mommy to the hospital.”
Soren looked down. The two boys had wrapped themselves around his legs.
They were sobbing, their wails tearing through the room.
But this time, his heart did not soften.
He had Serena locked in the basement.
The two boys cried and screamed, and not one bit of it moved him.
Soren walked over to me, as if all the strength had drained out of him.
The pad of his thumb brushed my cheek.
His throat was tight.
“What are you thinking about?”
I was silent for a moment, then turned my face away to avoid him.
“I was thinking.”
“That if my Caroline were still alive, she might have protected me too.”
Soren said nothing. He picked me up and carried me to the bedroom.
His breath warmed my skin.
His voice came as if he had to force it out.
“Anna, we can still have one.”
I curled my lips, my meaning unclear.
“Still have one?”
“How exactly?”
“By forcing me?”
I could imagine just how pale his face must be at this moment.
Soren swayed on his feet. Finally, he choked out, in the smallest voice:
“That’s not what I meant…”
After a long time, his lips moved.
“Anna, get some rest.”
He left, his footsteps light.
From the hall came the sound of the two boys crying.
And the shattering of a crystal vase.
“Daddy! I want Mommy!”
“Give Mommy back!”
“My brother’s right! Is it because of that bad woman in there—is that why Mommy’s locked up?!”
“Daddy, I hate you! I want Mommy!”
Suddenly there was a crash, and Soren roared.
