The Man I Couldn’t Escape Chapter 04
The sharp smell of disinfectant filled her nose.
Through the haze, Lorelei opened her eyes.
“Mrs. Weber, stay down. Don’t try to get up yet.
“You just had the miscarriage. Your body’s still weak.”
Lorelei froze, her gaze falling blankly on her lower abdomen.
Without realizing it, her fingers curled in one by one.
Each breath came thick with pain.
This had been her second child.
Bright red blood trickled along the lines of her palm, staining the snow-white sheet.
“Leila.” The hospital room door swung open. Rayden strode in and took her cold hand in his. The concern on his face was no different from before. “I’m sorry… Are you still in pain?”
Lorelei yanked her hand away and shoved him hard. “Don’t touch me!”
A flicker of cold, barely noticeable, crossed his eyes.
He straightened up, as if he’d lost the patience to keep performing.
But when he met Lorelei’s bloodshot eyes, he paused for a split second.
He leaned back down, frowning instinctively. “Does it hurt a lot?
“Hang in there. I’ll go get the doctor.”
“Don’t bother…”
As he watched him put on that act, Lorelei’s heart turned cold.
Before she could finish, his phone rang.
“Mr. Weber, Ms. Serrano ordered ten male escorts at the bar.
“Do you need our men to go get Ms. Serrano…”
With a bang, he kicked the door open and stormed out.
Lorelei stared at the door, still trembling from the force.
She clenched her fists around the sheets so tightly her knuckles went white.
She held that pose for a long time, then looked down at the wedding ring on her ring finger. Suddenly, with all her strength, she yanked it off.
She let out a bitter laugh and threw it straight out the window.
The last glow of the sun faded from the horizon.
Rayden was gone all day and never came back.
That night, just as Lorelei had fallen asleep, she was woken up.
“Ms. Payne, come with me right now. I’m taking you out of here.”
The last of her sleepiness vanished instantly. She looked at the masked figure in front of her. “My brother sent you, didn’t he?”
The person hesitated briefly. “Yeah. Let’s go, now.”
She didn’t stop to think about why the timing had moved up. Lorelei nodded, pulled the IV needle out of her hand, and got into the black car waiting downstairs.
The night was dark, and the car drove farther and farther off the main roads.
Lorelei’s heart sank. Something was wrong.
“Stop the car…
“I said, stop the car!”
The driver didn’t stop. Instead, he pressed the gas pedal harder. Lorelei stumbled, her head slamming into the back of the seat.
Before she could lift her head, the smell of ether hit her nose.
Her vision darkened, and she lost consciousness again.
When she woke up, she was tied to a rooftop.
“That chick is wild. Those trending photos are of her, right?
“Forget Mr. Weber. I’m getting a reaction just looking at her.”
Low, lewd laughter drifted through the air. The conversation between two men of different heights nearby reached Lorelei’s ears on the wind.
“When’s Mr. Weber gonna show up to play hero? It’s freezing out here.”
“What do you know? They’re fighting. Ms. Serrano ordered male escorts, so Mr. Weber’s gonna make a big show of rescuing his wife. It’s part of the game.”
Lorelei’s fingertips went numb, her blood feeling frozen solid.
The wounds that hadn’t healed yet sent a burning sting through her.
Another gust of cold wind hit, and Lorelei coughed violently.
Tears blurred her vision, but through them, she saw Rayden sprinting toward her, with Natasha right behind him.
