The Man I Couldn’t Escape Chapter 10
In stark contrast to Lorelei’s calm, Rayden was the complete opposite.
For the first time in his life, he felt his emotions slipping out of control.
Ever since Lorelei left, it was as if a piece of his heart had been abruptly torn away, leaving a dense and sudden pain that made him irritable and suffocated.
After Terrance disappeared, he used every connection he had to search for Terrance’s whereabouts. But all his efforts vanished without a trace. Every message he sent to Lorelei also went unanswered…
Empty bottles piled up at his feet as Rayden slumped disheveled against the cold wall, dark circles under his eyes impossible to hide.
He couldn’t sleep, nor did he dare to; he didn’t even dare to open the window.
Yet inside the room, Lorelei’s scent grew fainter and fainter.
When she was by his side before, he never gave it much thought.
When she was by his side before, he never gave it much thought.
Now that she was gone, he couldn’t help but think of her over and over again.
Suddenly, his phone rang. His eyes lit up and he answered immediately.
“Is there any news about Leila?”
The assistant’s tongue seemed to tie itself in knots, but after a tactful explanation, he quickly continued, “Mr. Weber, while our people were investigating the events from three years ago, they uncovered something else… about you and Ms. Serrano.” Half an hour later, the assistant stood in front of Rayden.
He handed over the documents and files together.
“Mr. Weber, there is no such thing as the Serrano Group!”
Rayden’s fingers paused as he flipped through the papers.
“Natasha’s background is entirely fake!”
Rayden looked up, his voice squeezing out with difficulty.
“Fake? Then when I fell off the cliff, how did she save me? If she wasn’t the heiress of the Serrano Group, with no money or power, how could she have mobilized so many people at once?!”
The assistant took a deep breath. “Mr. Weber… that’s exactly what I wanted to say. Your accident—falling off the cliff—was all orchestrated by her, and everything that followed was her own elaborate act.”
“She coveted your power and status, wanting to marry into the Weber family.”
“Sir Weber never agreed, so she changed her target.”
The assistant’s words burned Rayden’s heart like a searing brand.
As if suddenly realizing something, his voice turned hoarse.
“What about Leila?”
“Was she also part of Natasha’s scheme against me?!”
The assistant lowered his eyes and reported truthfully according to what he had found. “Mrs. Weber had nothing to do with any of this. We’ve already contacted the police, and all the videos and audio files have no signs of being doctored.” Rayden’s tightly clenched fist suddenly relaxed, and he let out a low laugh.
His Lorelei… had not lied to him.
But before long, his smile faded.
A tidal wave of pain surged into his heart, overwhelming him.
He had actually tormented himself over a woman who would stop at nothing.
He had tortured and hurt Lorelei for so long!
He had tortured and hurt Lorelei for so long!
He took a deep breath, but the suffocating feeling made it hard to breathe.
“Mr. Weber, we also found an unsent letter in Mrs. Weber’s email,” the assistant said as he opened the laptop.
“A month ago, Mrs. Weber wrote this letter to her family. She wrote that… she had decided to stay by your side. But at that time, Mr. Weber, you… cut off Mrs. Weber’s internet, so the letter was never sent.”
“If Mrs. Weber had sent it, we would have detected it in the system. You might have… seen this much earlier.”
Rayden’s throat tightened as he shakily clicked it open.
It was only a few lines, but it took him a long time to finish reading.
He opened his mouth as if to say something, but not a single word came out. Regret and guilt ignited like a spark, instantly setting off a wave of heat that burned through his heart.
At some point, the assistant had left.
Night gradually wove itself across the sky, and the villa grew dark.
Rayden closed his eyes, tilted his head back, and downed another bottle of liquor.
His mouth was full of bitterness.
His mouth was full of bitterness.
As the alcohol took hold, his gaze suddenly darkened.
If Natasha hadn’t returned to the country, he wouldn’t have said those things, nor would Lorelei have overheard them. If so, she wouldn’t have left.
He let go of the bottle, grabbed his car keys, and drove to the police station.
