He Wanted Me As His Second Mate But I’m The Alpha King’s Luna Chapter 01
The Ashford Alpha Comes Knocking
Two years ago, I became the Alpha King’s Luna and gave him an heir.
Then Damon Ashford came back, asking me to share him with his Chosen Mate.
Crates of mating gifts crowd the courtyard.
He struts through them.
“Fern, honey, I told you—Vera had to be marked first. Once she birthed the Ashford heir and settled into the pack, then I’d bring you in as my Second Mate…”
“Her pup just turned a month old. So here I am, right on time to keep my word.”
I don’t say a thing. I just stare.
He sighs and steps closer, all patient and reasonable, like he’s talking to a stubborn pup who just won’t listen.
“I know you’re mad. But Vera came from a brothel, Fern. You’re a Pack Alpha’s daughter. If I’d marked you first, she’d have lived under your paw forever. No she-wolf could survive that.”
“I know two years is a long wait. I added twenty extra crates to make up for it. Three days from now, we do the mating ceremony. Deal?”
He’s grinning like the deal’s already closed. I lift a hand.
“Guards. Throw him out.”
The nerve of this man.
I just gave birth to the Alpha King’s firstborn heir. My mate gave me a few weeks to visit my old pack, and this is what crawls out of the woodwork.
…
Damon leaps over the courtyard wall and crouches on top, grinning down at me like this is all a game.
“Same fire as always, huh? Even as my Second Mate, you’d never let anyone walk all over you. That’s my girl.”
He chuckles, then his voice dips soft.
“But Vera’s different. Sweet little thing. Cries alone when someone hurts her. Swallows every scrap of pain and never says a word.”
“First or Second—it’s just a title, Fern. In my heart”—he taps his chest—”you two weigh the same. I swear I won’t play favorites.”
Maybe two years in the Moon Kingdom’s palace changed something in me. I don’t scream. I don’t cry. I just tilt my head.
“Damon. What makes you think I’ve been sitting around, waiting to be your sloppy seconds?”
“Did it ever cross your mind that the Moon Goddess might’ve already chosen my mate by then?”
Damon actually laughs. Like I told a joke.
“Baby, we’ve been promised to each other since we were pups. Every Alpha bloodline between here and the coast knows you’re Ashford’s future Luna. Who else were you gonna mate?”
“And the mate-selection? Only unmated she-wolves could take part. Everyone knew you were promised to me. You wouldn’t have even been allowed through the doors.”
“And let’s be honest — you can’t sing, you can’t dance, you can barely hold a tune. You’re pretty enough, sure. Spunky.
But ‘spunky’ is the last thing an Alpha King wants under his roof.”
He says it gently. Like he’s doing me a kindness.
“I was up at the Border Wars, Fern, not deaf. Two years running, not one Alpha’s son has come knocking at your father’s gate.
You wanna rot in your daddy’s pack house till your fur goes gray?”
I bite the inside of my cheek.
In his head, I’m nothing.
We grew up side by side. When we came of mating age, he swore to the Moon Goddess—no other female, ever.
Then, three nights before our ceremony, he ran off and marked Vera —a rogue she-wolf from a brothel.
By dawn, he was gone to the Border Wars with her at his heel.
I sent a scathing letter. He wrote back like he was the one who’d been wronged.
“I was drugged, Fern. Vera saved my life and lost her honor doing it. What kind of male walks away from a debt like that?”
“Give me two years. Once she births me an heir, I’ll come home and take you as my Second Mate—proper ceremony, full pack witness.”
My reply went back that same night:
“Go to hell.”
