My Grandson’s Fiancée Called Me His Mistress Chapter 06

The Last Time I Bend

News of the canceled wedding reaches me while I’m mid-hand at the poker table, counting a nice little stack of winnings.

“Donna. Lucas has been outside for hours. Waiting to apologize.”

My longtime driver keeps his voice low. I keep counting my cash, ignore him completely.

One of the other women at the table snorts.

“Now he shows up, only because the wedding blew up in his face and he has nowhere else to run.”

“Don’t let that little rat fool you, Vee. These young men cry real tears when they need something. I’d hand over my whole purse if he looked at me with that face.”

I laugh despite myself. My old friends never lost their edge, even with all the gray hair between us.

I slide my winnings over to my driver, throw on my coat, and head out to the garden.

Lucas stands outside with pale lips, apparently having waited all afternoon. I have him brought in and give him something hot to drink. Once he’s settled, he opens his mouth, but I raise a hand to stop him.

“I already know what you’re going to say. I told you that the next time you came to me, it couldn’t be as a Moretti grandson. And yet here you are.”

“Are you trying to insult me on purpose?”

I lean back, legs crossed, watching him squirm.

“No, Nonna. I came to apologize. I was wrong about everything. I’m asking you to forgive me.”

I already know exactly what happened at the wedding. Half the guests came for my sake, and my old friends made sure everyone knew it. Even without my interference, his marriage was never going to survive the fallout.

I look past him toward Marcus, sitting there calmly sipping his coffee, unbothered.

“Your son caused this mess. You’re not going to handle it?”

Marcus raises an eyebrow in exactly the same way I do.

“I got thrown out on my own at eighteen and had to fix my own messes. My son can learn to do the same.”

Lucas grew up sheltered, surrounded by relatives who solved every problem before it reached him. That’s why he’s spent his life avoiding difficult decisions. Then Sera came along, and he made the wrong decision with absolute conviction.

But when it comes to me, neither Vincent nor Marcus ever pushed me into anything I didn’t want.

“Mom, Dad never let you take a hit for anyone while he was alive. There’s no reason my son’s mess should be yours to carry now. If he found out, he’d come haunt me in my sleep tonight.”

I laugh softly at his nonsense, shaking my head.

When you reach my age, all you really want is to leave things settled and in order.

I promised Vincent I’d look after this family for him. So this… this is the last time I lower my guard.
