My Grandson’s Fiancée Called Me His Mistress Chapter 05

A Wedding Without the Queen

“She’s not here because there’s nothing to see here without her,” someone finally says. “I only postponed a nine-figure deal to come meet Donna Moretti in person. What’s the point of any of this now?”

“Exactly. If Victoria’s not important enough to invite to her own grandson’s wedding, then clearly none of us small-timers matter enough to be here either.”

The room descends into chaos. Lucas hasn’t taken over the family business yet and has no idea how to control a room like this. He looks to his father for help, but his father turns away. His mother shakes her head. She can’t fix this for him either.

Sera turns pale with humiliation and scrambles for an excuse.

“No, that’s not what happened. Nonna hasn’t been feeling well lately, so I told Lucas to let her rest. I didn’t want her overexerting herself because of me.”

A voice cuts clean through the noise before she finishes.

“Bullshit. That woman hiked mountain trails with me last month and never once slowed down. She isn’t sick. Her own family disrespected her.”

“I turned down dinner with the mayor tonight just to finally shake Victoria Moretti’s hand. Without her here, this whole wedding’s a waste of my time.”

The man throws his glass to the floor. An ex-soldier who made his fortune in real estate, he has no patience for disrespect.

Sera goes pale, and Lucas can’t meet anyone’s eyes.

“This kid’s got some nerve,” someone mutters, loud enough to carry. “Banning his own grandmother because his wife doesn’t like her. Disgraceful.”

“You know when he was born, that woman donated ten million to build schools in the poorest region of this state, just to buy him good luck. And this is the thanks she gets.”

Lucas’s hand drifts to the small gold medallion he’s worn since birth. The cold metal against his fingers drags him straight back to something his father told him when he was eight years old.

You were sickly when you were born. Your grandmother believed protecting you required a real sacrifice, so she gave ten million to charity and built schools in three counties. That medallion belonged to your great-grandfather. She never took it off until the day she put it around your neck.

Son. That woman loves you more than you’ll ever understand.

Lucas sways as the full weight of what he’s done hits him. He’s driven away the one person who loved him unconditionally his entire life.
