The Heiress’s Revenge Chapter 05
Three years. He was the one who’d shown me the knives hidden behind every Wentworth relative’s smile.
He’d taught me to maneuver. Endure. Discard dignity when necessary.
“Thea. In this circle, soft hearts and innocence are the real sins.”
I’d learned it all. Learned it well. So well that now, he actually believed even my wedding date was a move to corner him.
“Thea. I taught you tactics to protect yourself. Look at you now. What’s the difference between you and those Wentworth relatives you wanted to escape?”
I listened. Almost laughed.
The difference? They schemed and got schemed against. But at least they knew what they were doing.
I’d actually believed, once, that everything he taught me was so I could one day stand at his side.
The wound in my wrist throbbed. But the last churning wave in my chest finally went still.
“What I am now is no longer Mr. Rockwell’s concern. Keep your distance.”
“Thea.” His voice came from behind me. Calm. Certain. “Walk away now. But when you come crawling back, don’t forget what I taught you. The prettiest surrender is crawling back to beg.”
I didn’t slow.
The car door closed. Darkness swallowed me.
My phone lit up in the silence. News apps exploding. Headlines screaming: ‘Shocking Announcement? Rockwell Heir Rumored to Marry Wentworth Heiress in Three Days. Insider Confirms.’
Photo of mine and Greyson’s backs at some banquet. My father’s anonymous leak. Roasting me over the flames.
I killed the screen. Looked out the window. Wentworth Manor blazed with light. The staff was already working through the night.
I’d already chosen my groom. It wasn’t Greyson.
