The Vicious Vixen: Mother To The Panther Lord’s Pups Chapter 11
The Bond Answers
He came to my room at midnight.
He did not knock. The door opened, and Darian stood there.
He had showered and changed into a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
I was on the balcony, leaning against the stone wall. The estate below us was quiet.
He closed the door behind him. Locked it.
“Three months,” he said, walking toward me. “I left you here with nothing. No backup. No authority anyone respected. No money of your own.”
“And?”
“And you took my house apart and rebuilt it.”
I turned to face him. “Someone had to.”
He stopped two feet from me. Close enough that I could smell pine, smoke, and soap.
His eyes moved over my face. Not the way shifters usually looked at me. Not with fear. Not with judgment.
“What do you want, Aurelia?”
“Excuse me?”
“From this.” He gestured between us. “From me. The Nightfall name. The house. The Lady title. What’s your price?”
I held his gaze. “You think I did all of that for a title?”
“I think every shifter wants something.”
“Fine.”
I stepped closer. Close enough to feel his body heat.
“I want a lord who shows up. I want two pups who grow up strong enough to lead everything you’ve built. And I want you to never leave them unprotected again.”
His jaw tightened.
“If you can’t do that,” I said, “then stay out of my way and let me do it for you.”
His expression changed. He stopped testing me.
“You’re not afraid of me,” he said.
“No.”
“Every shifter in this territory is afraid of me.”
“I’m not every shifter. I’m a fox. You already knew that when you picked me.”
His hand came up. His fingers touched my jaw, firm but careful. He tilted my face toward him.
“I chose you,” he said quietly, “because I watched you fight your own family in broad daylight and win. Three years ago, I saw you face down your father and walk away without looking back. Then you gave your coat to a stray pup on the road like it was nothing.”
My breath caught.
“You saw that?”
“I saw everything. The fight. The way you wiped your face when you thought no one was watching. The pup you fed.” His thumb brushed my jaw. “Every shifter called you a vicious vixen. But I knew better.”
No one had ever looked past my name. No one had ever seen me clearly and stayed.
“I needed someone vicious,” he said. “Someone who would protect my pups the way no one ever protected her.”
“So you used me.”
“Yes.”
He did not look away. He did not say sorry. He only told the truth.
“And now?” I asked.
“Now I don’t want it to be an arrangement anymore.”
He kissed me hard. His hands moved to my waist and pulled me against him.
I kissed him back with three months of anger, loneliness, and every fight I had won alone in this house.
He pressed me against the stone wall of the balcony. I did not pull away.
“Partners,” I said against his mouth.
“Partners,” he repeated.
After that, we stopped talking.
That night, the mate bond between us stopped being an arrangement.
