Abandoned XXL Wife: My Second Husband Is A Tycoon Chapter 06
Daniel took a step back.
Ethan hadn’t raised his voice. He didn’t have to.
Daniel looked him over.
Simple clothes. No flashy suit.
Then his eyes landed on the watch around Ethan’s wrist.
A Patek Philippe.
His confidence slipped for half a second.
Then he glanced at my little stall and forced a laugh.
“So what? Am I wrong?”
He pointed at me.
“She gets divorced and immediately starts working as a nanny. What kind of kid is she taking care of?”
His eyes moved back to Ethan.
“And who the hell are you? Her new boyfriend?”
He looked Ethan up and down.
“Nice face. Terrible taste.”
Ethan’s expression didn’t change.
He pulled out his phone.
“It’s Ethan Foster.”
He made one call.
“Give every business partner of Kane Trading a withdrawal notice. I want it done in ten minutes.”
A pause.
“And tell the banks to freeze Daniel Kane’s credit.”
Daniel stared at him.
Then he laughed.
“Ethan Foster?”
He threw his head back.
“You’re saying you’re the Ethan Foster?”
He looked at me.
“Where did you find this guy, Sophie? Some cheap actor?”
His laughter carried across the bridge.
“If you’re Ethan Foster, then I’m the president.”
His phone rang.
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
He looked at the screen.
“Dad?” He answered.
“What happened?”
His face changed. “What? The partners are canceling their contracts?”
He straightened. “No. That’s impossible.”
His father’s voice was loud enough that I could hear it from where I stood.
Daniel’s face went from red to pale.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
Then it slipped from his hand.
It hit the pavement.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
His lips trembled.
“Mr. Foster…”
Ethan didn’t even look at him.
He bent down and picked Charlie up.
Charlie wrapped his arms around Ethan’s neck.
“You had your chance,” Ethan said.
His voice was quiet.
“But you went after the wrong person.”
He looked at Daniel once.
“Leave.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Mr. Foster, please…”
“Don’t make me come back.”
Daniel stood there, frozen.
Then he turned and stumbled away with the influencer right behind him.
The crowd watched him go.
Then I heard a wet scrape beneath my shoe.
I looked down.
The T-shirt.
The one Daniel had stepped on.
A black footprint covered the front.
It was one of my favorite designs.
I’d spent nights drawing that little cartoon bear. I had chosen the fabric myself. Cut every piece. Sewed every sample.
Now there was a shoe print across its face.
I crouched down and grabbed it.
Water and dirt had worked their way into the fabric.
I rubbed at the stain with my fingers.
Nothing.
I rubbed harder.
Still nothing.
A tear hit the shirt.
Then another.
I stopped trying to clean it.
I sat there with the ruined shirt in my hands.
People passed by.
Some looked.
Some whispered.
I didn’t care.
A small hand touched my back.
Once.
Then again.
Slow and careful.
I turned around.
Charlie was crouching beside me.
His face was still pale from what had happened, but he was trying very hard not to cry.
“Mommy,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“If you’re sad, you can cry.”
His little hand reached up and wiped under my eye.
“I’ll stay with you.”
His own eyes were wet.
He blinked hard.
“Daddy said grown-ups can hurt too.”
“So crying isn’t bad.”
He grabbed my sleeve.
“I’ll eat all my food.”
“I’ll grow really tall.”
“And next time that bad man comes, I’ll protect you.”
My throat tightened.
I pulled him into my arms.
His cheek was warm against mine.
“Mommy’s okay.”
I wiped my face.
“He’s a bad man. He doesn’t get my tears.”
Charlie nodded against my shoulder.
I held him a little tighter.
“Let’s go home.”
Ethan had been standing a few steps away.
He walked over without saying anything.
He took the heavy bag from my hand.
Then he held out his other hand to Charlie.
Charlie grabbed it.
We walked back together.
