My lips really were swollen the next morning.
I shot Ethan a furious look.
He gave me an awkward smile.
“I’ll drive you to work.”
After what happened the night before, everyone at the mall already knew about our relationship.
People treated me with even more respect than before.
But there were still people who hadn’t heard.
That morning, I was wearing my work clothes and taking measurements at the construction site when a man suddenly walked in.
He slowly took off his hat.
Then he looked at me with a strange smile.
Daniel Kane.
Daniel walked toward me.
“I thought Ethan would at least play around with you for a while before getting bored.”
“I didn’t expect him to get tired of you this quickly.”
“He really doesn’t know how to treat a woman.”
“Even if he doesn’t like you anymore, he shouldn’t have sent you out here to do construction work.”
“You graduated from a top university. How could you possibly handle this kind of dirty work?”
“Daniel, what I do has nothing to do with you.”
“Please leave.”
“Oh, Sophie. Still got that temper, huh?”
“I came here today to tell you something.”
“Just because the Foster family won’t work with me doesn’t mean nobody else will.”
“Once I finish this project, the Kane family will be just as famous as the Foster family in this city.”
“What does that have to do with me?”
Daniel’s smile faded slightly.
“Sophie, I came here to tell you that I still love you.”
“The women outside meant nothing. It was all business.”
“You’ve always been the only woman in my heart.”
“Sophie, stop being so stubborn.”
“All you have to do is admit you were wrong and promise you’ll stop being so difficult.”
“I’ll talk to my mother. I’ll get her to accept you again.”
“Then you’ll be the most respected Mrs. Kane in this city.”
The front door suddenly swung open.
Ethan walked in carrying lunch.
“I didn’t know Mr. Kane had a hobby of stealing other men’s wives.”
Charlie popped out from behind him, hands on his hips.
“Bad guy! Don’t bully my mommy!”
Daniel froze.
“Mommy?”
“Who are you calling Mommy?”
“Sophie is my mommy!”
Charlie puffed out his chest.
“And I’m her favorite big boy!”
Daniel stared at him in shock.
“Isn’t she your family’s nanny?”
“You’re the nanny!”
Charlie pointed at him.
“Your whole family are nannies!”
“You…”
Ethan wrapped an arm around my waist and leaned down to kiss my forehead.
“Mr. Kane, you’re seriously behind on the news.”
“Sophie is already my wife.”
“My wife, Sophie Foster.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“You…”
His hand rose, trembling.
“That’s impossible!”
“Sophie loves me!”
“We haven’t even been divorced for a month. How could she possibly marry you?”
“And she’s a divorced woman.”
“Why would a man like you ever want her?”
Ethan pulled me closer.
His expression turned cold.
“Mr. Kane, you’ve got a dirty mind, so you see dirt everywhere.”
“You assume everyone is as shallow and money-hungry as you are.”
“But Sophie?”
“To me, she’s priceless.”
“She is the woman I treasure most.”
Just then, security rushed in.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Foster, Mrs. Foster.”
“He was wearing a hat and we couldn’t see his face. That’s how he managed to get inside.”
Ethan nodded.
“Throw him out.”
As security dragged Daniel away, he kept turning his head back toward me.
“Sophie!”
“I’ll come back!”
“I don’t believe you’ve stopped loving me!”
“I’ll win you back!”
He kept shouting until he disappeared from sight.
Only then did I finally step out of Ethan’s arms.
Ethan looked at me with an exaggerated pout.
“You really don’t want me to hold you?”
“But, seriously, my whole body is covered in dust.”
Ethan pulled me right back into his arms.
“I don’t care.”
“I want to hold you anyway.”
Charlie stood beside us and covered his eyes.
“This is so embarrassing!”
