Too Late He Wanted Me Back Chapter 01

After their son’s death, Seraphina Astriage dropped every habit Jaylen Canyer had always hated. She no longer checked up on him constantly. When he stayed out all night, she neither cried nor made a scene anymore.

Even after she was in a car crash, when doctors asked Seraphina to contact her next of kin, she replied indifferently, “I’m an orphan. I have no family.”

Still, a nurse recognized her. “You’re Mrs. Canyer, right? Mr. Canyer is upstairs. Shall I go fetch him?”

It was then that Seraphina realized the hospital belonged to the Canyer family.

She shook her head and softly declined the offer. Yet half an hour later, Jaylen came down anyway.

His cold, sharp brows dipped slightly, casting a suffocating pressure over the room. “You were in a car accident. Why didn’t you contact me?”

Seraphina lowered her gaze. “It’s only a broken leg, nothing serious.”

Her casual tone stirred an inexplicable restlessness deep within Jaylen’s heart.

In Jaylen’s memories, Seraphina had always been delicate and clingy. Back when they were dating, even a mild cold would have her curling up in his arms, craving comfort and kisses. Now, she had broken a leg without so much as a frown.

Jaylen was about to say something when he heard the nurses gossiping at the door. “Mr. Canyer really spoils Ms. Demaillet. She only has a small scratch on her knee, but he’s so worried. He called in a team of specialists to see her and stayed with her every minute. He even carries her wherever she goes so she doesn’t have to walk at all.”

Jaylen’s heart tightened. Anger flickered across his face, yet his eyes drifted toward Seraphina. He expected her to grow jealous and upset.

But Seraphina didn’t even look up. She just kept her eyes down and rested on the hospital bed.

Jaylen’s mood grew even worse. He explained in a cold tone, “Don’t listen to their nonsense. Cyenne hit her knee while filming, and I only brought her to the hospital because I was passing by.”

Seraphina let out a soft, indifferent hum and said nothing more.

Irritation flared up in Jaylen. “Do you not believe me?”

“I believe you,” Seraphina answered plainly. She was obedient, yet every word rang hollow and detached. “Cyenne is your foster sister. What you share is family affection. It’s only natural for you to look after her.”

In the past, Jaylen would always scold Seraphina with a cold look on his face. “Cyenne is like a sister to me. I can’t just leave her alone. It’s just a sibling bond. Can you stop overreacting?”

Now that Seraphina was finally doing what he wanted, no longer crying or making a fuss. Jaylen should have felt relieved. Instead, he felt a heavy, suffocating pain in his chest.

Nothing felt right anymore.

Just then, a nurse opened the door. “Mr. Canyer, Ms. Demaillet says her knee hurts very much. Please come upstairs right now.”

Feeling frustrated and annoyed, Jaylen snapped at her. “If her knee hurts, let a doctor handle it. I’m not a doctor. Why do I need to be there?”

The nurse stepped back quietly. Jaylen turned to Seraphina with a look of regret. “Sera, are you still upset about the baby? Cyenne was wrong for what happened, and I’ve already scolded her.”

He paused, then walked over and sat on the edge of Seraphina’s bed.

“We can have another child in the future.” Jaylen took Seraphina’s hand. “I tell you what. I’ll stay here by your side for the entire week.”

Seraphina quietly pulled her hand out of Jaylen’s grasp.

Jaylen frowned and was about to lose his temper when a loud noise came from the doorway.

Cyenne Demaillet was leaning on crutches but had fallen right outside the room.

Jaylen rushed over at once and picked Cyenne up. “Why are you wandering around? I told you to rest in bed.”

“I heard Sera was in a car accident,” Cyenne said in a weak, tearful voice. “I just wanted to check on her.”

She huddled closer to Jaylen as if Seraphina had bullied her. Then she looked at Seraphina with a trembling voice. “Sera, please don’t be mad at me. I didn’t mean to kill Tino.”

In the past, Seraphina would’ve broken down and screamed. She would’ve cried and asked Jaylen why he was protecting the woman who killed their son.

But now, she didn’t say anything. She just lay there with her eyes closed as if she were asleep.

She looked pale and fragile, as if her spirit were completely broken.

Jaylen felt a sudden, sharp pain in his heart. He lowered his voice. “I’ll take Cyenne upstairs first and then I’ll come right back to stay with you.”

He turned and left while carrying Cyenne. Night fell, but he never returned.

Later, NASA called Seraphina. “Professor Astriage, are you sure you want to join the Lunar Ladder Project? This is a top-secret national mission. Once you join, you’ll have to stay at the base for decades. You’ll be completely cut off from the world and won’t be allowed to contact anyone, not even your husband.”

“I’m sure,” Seraphina replied calmly. “Don’t worry. I’ve already filed for divorce. The cooling-off period ends in one week. After that, I’ll be a free person with no ties. This isolated project is perfect for me.”
