Too Late He Wanted Me Back Chapter 03

Seraphina had been lying down while taking the call.

When she heard the noise at the door, she quickly hung up, closed her eyes, and pretended to be asleep.

Jaylen stormed in, clearly angry. But as he got closer, he saw Seraphina lying there perfectly still with her eyes shut.

He assumed she’d just been talking in her sleep.

Jaylen let out a sigh of relief, though a dull irritation remained in his chest. Even in Seraphina’s dreams, he couldn’t stand the thought of her not loving him.

He gently shook Seraphina awake. “Sera, were you having a nightmare? I heard you crying and saying you didn’t love someone. What did you dream about? Why were you crying so much in your sleep?”

Seraphina looked down. “It was nothing. I just dreamed of our son. He was crying and asking why his mother and father didn’t love him.”

A sharp pain hit Jaylen’s heart. He pulled her tightly into his arms, his voice sounding heavy. “Sera, what happened to Tino was an accident. It wasn’t your fault. You shouldn’t torture yourself like this.”

After a short pause, he added, “We’re still young. We can have more children. We’ll have plenty of children in the years to come.”

Seraphina remained silent. She felt a deep chill in her heart and was beyond the point of being able to cry.

She was still young and could have more children, but what difference did that make? Her son was gone. How could bringing another child into the world simply erase everything that had happened?

At this point, Seraphina didn’t have the strength to argue with Jaylen anymore. She calmly changed the subject. “Jaylen, why are you here so late at night?”

Jaylen froze, and he looked a bit embarrassed. “Sera, Cyenne has a stomachache. She wants that chicken soup you always make.”

Seraphina stiffened. She had just survived a car accident and was lying there with a broken leg, yet Jaylen had woken her in the middle of the night to ask for chicken soup for Cyenne.

Realizing how bad he sounded, he quickly tried to fix it. “Sera, you don’t have to get out of bed. Just tell me the soup recipe, and I’ll make it myself.”

Jaylen had always suffered from a weak stomach and frequent pain. For his sake, Seraphina had studied books on natural remedies just to create that recipe for him. Whenever his stomach hurt, she always made it for him without fail.

However, because she had studied so hard during her senior year of high school, Seraphina had developed chronic stomach issues of her own. Jaylen had never once noticed. In the five years of their marriage, he’d never cooked a single meal for her, let alone soup.

She finally understood. From the very beginning, this marriage had been nothing but her own unrequited love.

Seraphina let out a bitter smile and said softly, “Bring me a pen and paper. I’ll write the recipe down for you.”

Jaylen immediately told his assistant to bring them over.

But the moment Seraphina finished writing and handed the note to him, his heart skipped a beat.

He suddenly remembered the last time he had asked for the chicken soup recipe. Back then, Seraphina had told him gently, “I’ll only give it to you once we get divorced. As long as we’re married, I’ll stay by your side and make this chicken soup for you for the rest of your life.”

Now, Seraphina had handed it over without the slightest hesitation.

A heavy, suffocating feeling settled in Jaylen’s chest, but he stubbornly convinced himself that her talk of divorce was just a temporary fit. Deep down, he believed Seraphina could never truly leave him.

“Mr. Canyer, Ms. Demaillet’s stomach pain is getting worse. She won’t stop crying for you. Please come upstairs right now,” a nurse’s voice called from the doorway. Jaylen frowned and snapped irritably, “She’s always so dramatic. Give her some painkillers if it hurts. Stop bothering me.”

Even though Jaylen’s words were harsh, he headed upstairs to be with Cyenne the second he finished speaking.

He had always been this way—harsh with his words, but endlessly indulgent and protective of her in his actions. Seraphina had long grown used to it. She said nothing, closed her eyes, and tried to rest.

But she had barely drifted off when Jaylen dragged her roughly out of the hospital bed.

“Seraphina, why did Yenne start vomiting blood after drinking the chicken soup I made?” He gripped her jaw tightly, his voice cold and venomous. “Did you poison that recipe?”
