Too Late He Wanted Me Back Chapter 04

Seraphina looked up and glanced at Jaylen with indifference. “You can ask the doctor to check the recipe. Then you’ll know if there’s any poison in it.

“Or do you actually not care about the truth? Maybe you just want to take your anger out on me. If that’s the case, you don’t need to make excuses. Just punish me. I’ll take it.”

Cyenne had framed Seraphina like this countless times before.

She would intentionally fall down the stairs and then tearfully claim that Seraphina had pushed her.

She would splash hot oil on her own hands while Seraphina was cooking, then bite her lip and whimper that Seraphina hadn’t meant to do it.

The incidents were endless.

In the past, Seraphina couldn’t understand why a man as brilliant as Jaylen failed to see through such obvious lies. Now she finally knew. It wasn’t that he couldn’t see it. He just felt so much pain for Cyenne’s injuries that he needed someone to blame.

And that someone was always Seraphina.

Now, Seraphina couldn’t even be bothered to look up. She had grown numb, and it no longer hurt when Jaylen misunderstood her.

A heavy, suffocating weight settled in Jaylen’s chest. Frowning, he said, “What do you mean by taking my anger out on you? Sera, if you have a problem, just tell me. Don’t talk to me in such a cold, bitter tone. I’m your husband, not your enemy.”

But Seraphina closed her eyes. “I have nothing left to say to you.”

Jaylen’s heart jolted. “What are you talking about? What do you mean you have nothing to say?”

Seraphina stayed silent. Her eyes remained tightly shut, blocking him out and locking Jaylen completely out of her world.

Irritation washed over Jaylen. For no clear reason, a quiet dread took root in his chest. He was afraid that he was losing Seraphina for good.

The urgency gnawed at him, making him feel like he had to say or do anything just to hold onto her.

After a long pause, Jaylen finally said, “Tomorrow marks one week since Tino’s passing. I’ll stay with you to honor his memory.”

Seraphina’s body stiffened visibly, yet she still didn’t open her eyes.

Just then, a nurse’s voice came from the doorway. “Mr. Canyer, we’ve finished pumping Ms. Demaillet’s stomach. She’s out of danger, but she’s terrified and keeps calling your name.”

“I see,” Jaylen replied coldly. He turned back and looked at Seraphina with a long, heavy gaze. “Rest well, Sera. Tomorrow we’ll go home together to say our final goodbyes to Tino.”

The night felt endless. Seraphina lay awake, staring into the dark until the sun came up.

Once the one-week mark passed, the funeral and burial would follow.

The child she had carried for ten months and gone through so much to bring into the world would soon be reduced to ashes. He would be sealed in an urn and buried in the cold, dark earth.

The next day, Jaylen arrived on time and drove Seraphina back to the Canyer’s residence.

The Canyer’s residence was filled with a thick, miserable gloom. The house was decorated for a funeral, and every servant was dressed in black. The sound of weeping filled the memorial room. Some of those tears were real and some were fake, but Seraphina’s heart was breaking more than anyone else’s.

Leaning on her cane, Seraphina stepped unsteadily into the memorial room. She just wanted to see her son one last time.

But the moment she crossed the threshold, her mother-in-law, Maeve Canyer, charged at her in a rage. “You wicked woman! How dare you show your face here?”

Maeve slapped Seraphina twice across the face, then grabbed her by the hair and started hitting her while screaming viciously. “It’s all your fault! You killed my grandson! You knew Tino couldn’t swim, yet you took him surfing in the ocean on purpose. You vicious woman. You wanted him dead.”

Seraphina froze in shock. It had been Cyenne who took her son, Santino Canyer, to the beach to surf, not her. Why was Maeve blaming her for this?

Her instinct told her Jaylen was behind it.

She turned to look at Jaylen.

Just as she suspected, Jaylen looked away, unable to meet her eyes.

At the same time, others in the room swarmed forward. They joined Maeve in the hitting and insulting Seraphina.

“You heartless bitch! How could you let your own flesh and blood drown?”

“Get out of this house! You killed him, and you’re not welcome at Tino’s service!”
