I loathed this sort of public maneuvering.

He had never asked what I wanted, yet he was making his request directly to the King, as if I were just another political resource to be assigned by royal decree.

The hall went silent.

My father rose, trying to refuse politely.

“Genevieve has only just completed her independence oath. Cedar Ridge hopes she can enjoy a few more years of freedom.”

Celeste smiled and said the engagement could be signed now, with the wedding held a few years later.

Adrian added, “I don’t mind that her previous engagement was canceled. I’ll treat her well.”

My father’s face darkened.

I, however, felt nothing.

Adrian’s private life was a complete mess. He might not mind me, but I minded him very much.

King Arthur had been drinking and was clearly weighing the political gains of such a marriage.

Evelyn sat alone, sipping her drink, as though she had no interest in any of it.

Across from them, Julian’s dark eyes were bottomless.

Just as King Arthur began to speak, Julian suddenly coughed violently and spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor.

Everything descended into chaos.

Healers rushed over. King Arthur forgot the subject entirely and left with Julian, Evelyn following right behind.

And just like that, Adrian’s proposal went unanswered.
