I Was The Perfect Queen But He Forgot My Name Chapter 64

“I could keep you in this office. I could revoke your access and make it so the only person you ever see is me.”

“I would eat beside you, sleep beside you, handle state affairs beside you. No one would ever steal your attention again.”

“We could even have a child to inherit the throne. You wouldn’t have to trouble yourself over anyone else. You would only have to look at me.”

His embrace was cold and crushing, as if he wanted to grind me into his very bones.

And yet the moment I pushed him lightly, he stepped back.

His eyes never left me, but for the first time, tears slipped from them.

He was saying terrifying things, yet he was the one crying.

I had meant to tell him that Julian would always stand between us.

In the end, I didn’t.

That obsessive darkness was still there in his eyes.

“But I can’t do that.”

He lowered his head.

It had been at his direction that Mara asked me what kind of life I wanted.

During this whole time, he had not dared to see me, because he had been afraid he might actually strip me of my freedom.

“If I lock you up, you won’t be yourself anymore. You’ll hate me.”

“I can’t give you one more reason to hate me.”

He forced a faint smile.

“I’m dying soon. You know that.”

The public succession document King Arthur left behind still named Julian Fraser.

He refused to let the kingdom know that the Luna Queen had concealed another son, ordering Rowan to take the throne under his brother’s name.

Rowan no longer cared what name the world called him.

“I once wanted to keep you by force. But if I did, you’d become like Evelyn—slowly withering inside this castle.”

“If you really love someone, how can you bear to make them unhappy?”

At last, he took my hand.

“Genevieve, I really do love you. Every time I think I’ve reached the limit, the next day I love you even more.”

He pressed my father’s signed resignation approval into my palm.

Then he personally opened the office door.

“Go.”

“And don’t look back. Leave while I still haven’t changed my mind.”

The door shut behind me.

I stood there for a very long time, the approval in my hand.
