Their Favoritism Resulted In A Cruel Outcome Chapter 07

The night before, my father had still believed that in the end, she would understand.

Now, she lay quietly in his arms.

She would not argue.

And she would not forgive him.

I stood outside the police line and watched it all.

The old me would have gone to comfort my father and my brothers.

Now, I only felt tired.

They had known that place was cold and had no food. They had known my grandmother was old, my mother was frail, Rachel was pregnant, and Molly was only six.

And they still tricked us into that building.

In their minds, a cup of hot coffee, a warm coat, a few pastries, and some apologies would be enough to buy our forgiveness.

Connor wouldn’t let the coroner’s assistant touch me, and he wouldn’t let the funeral staff clean my body.

He wiped the black ash from the corner of my mouth with a handkerchief, then folded the torn part of my wedding dress closed.

“Willa.”

“We’re going home.”

“You sleep for now.”

“When you wake up, I’ll explain everything.”

Sitting on the step at the back of the hearse, I actually laughed.

Even now, he still thought all that was missing was an explanation.

The procession slowly made its way back to the Worthington house.

On the way there, the cars had carried coffee, hand warmers, and clothes. On the way back, every car carried someone who would never wake up again.

The tires rolled over the wet road with a low, muffled sound.

It was like a wedding procession that had arrived one night too late.

Blair was still at home, waiting for news.
