The General’s Ex-Wife Is A Colonel He Can’t Have Chapter 09
On the way to the airfield, I thought about the past.
I thought of being eighteen, when Beau grabbed my hand and we ran from my foster home.
I thought of being twenty, standing with him as he took his oath as a new recruit.
I thought of being twenty-two, exchanging wedding rings in the base chapel.
Then I thought of twenty-eight, when the other women started to appear.
The memories flashed through my mind, then vanished behind me.
It was over.
Now, I was going to see what my parents had left behind.
And I was going to walk the path they never got to finish.
By the time the military transport landed at Joint Base Virginia, it was late at night.
I stepped down the gangway with my duffel bag, the cold coastal wind hitting me head-on.
“Major Wells!”
Someone called out from ahead.
I looked up to see an older general with graying hair walking toward me, the stars on his shoulders gleaming under the lights.
He stopped in front of me and saluted.
“I’m General Thompson, deputy commander of this base.”
“Your father, Scott Wells, was my classmate at the Air Force Academy. Your mother, Katherine Wells—I was the one who interviewed her for the fighter wing.”
I snapped to attention and returned the salute, my throat tight.
“General Thompson…”
He waved a hand.
“Just call me Uncle Thompson.”
He looked at my face, and his eyes slowly reddened.
“You look so much like them. Especially your eyes. You have your mother’s eyes.”
As he spoke, he took my luggage.
“Come on. Let’s get you home.”
“The house your parents left has been maintained all these years.”
