The General’s Ex-Wife Is A Colonel He Can’t Have Chapter 13

I turned to look at him.

“Back then, I thought what we had was stronger than love.”

“We’d been to war together. I thought that kind of bond couldn’t break.”

“I learned that it could.”

“To you, I was a default setting. You were used to me waiting at home. Used to a light being on when you got back. Used to the fact that no matter what you did, I would never leave.”

“That’s why you felt safe hurting me, again and again. You thought I would always forgive you.”

“Beau, I’ve used up every feeling I ever had for you.”

He slowly stood, his eyes completely red.

“That’s not true. It wasn’t that I didn’t love you. I just… I got too used to you.”

I cut him off.

“That’s worse.”

“If you don’t love someone, you can at least be honest. Habit lets you keep someone by your side while you destroy them.”

Someone knocked on the door.

The duty officer stuck his head in.

“Major Wells, General Thompson is looking for you.”

“I’ll be right there,” I said.

As I reached the doorway, Beau called my name.

“Celine!”

I stopped but didn’t turn around.

“If back then… if I had chosen you…”

“If I had protected you in the fire first…”

I spoke calmly.

“There is no ‘if.’”

“Beau, the moment you walked out of that fire protecting her, we were over.”

I opened the door and walked out, the lock clicking softly behind me.

The hallway lights were bright.

I knew exactly where I was going.

Three months later, General Thompson called me into his office.

He set a top-secret file in front of me.

“We have a mission from Command. It’s dangerous, and it’s important.”

“We need someone to go deep behind enemy lines and bring back a critical piece of intelligence.”

“You’re the best choice, but you have the right to refuse.”
