The General’s Ex-Wife Is A Colonel He Can’t Have Chapter 12

“Celine…”

His voice was rough.

I closed the door and sat on the sofa farthest from him.

“General Walker, if this is about the divorce, please contact the JAG office.”

Beau crossed the room in a few quick strides and dropped into a crouch in front of me.

“I didn’t sign them.”

“Celine, I didn’t sign. We’re still husband and wife.”

I looked at him calmly.

“Whether you sign or not doesn’t change anything. The papers are with the court. We’ve been legally separated for six months. The divorce will be finalized.”

He reached out and grabbed my hand. His fingertips were ice-cold.

“I was wrong.”

“Celine, I know that now. I ended things with Kinsley. She and her mother both left the base.”

“I also investigated the fire. You didn’t start it. She knocked over a portable stove.”

I pulled my hand back.

“And?”

“You came all this way to tell me it was a misunderstanding?”

“No.” He shook his head, panic in his eyes. “That’s not what I mean.”

“I mean I finally understand. I understand how despicable I was.”

“Please, just give me one more chance. Let’s start over.”

I stood and walked to the window.

Outside, on the training grounds, recruits were running laps, their cadences carrying on the night air.

“Beau, do you remember the first mission we worked together?”

He froze.

“In Afghanistan. You led the assault team; I was on intel support.”

“The night before the op, you told me that if you didn’t make it back, I should find a good man and marry him, not wait for you.”

“I told you that if you dared not to come back, I’d drag you back myself.”

I stared out the window, not turning around.

“You were shot. The bullet was close to your heart.”

“I waited outside the operating room in that field hospital all night. I thought that as long as you survived, I could give up anything.”
