The dock office sent over the surveillance footage quickly.
Evan played the security feed and the family’s original videos side by side.
In one screen, I was running toward the water. In the other, Cassidy was watching my back with a smug smile, even lifting a hand to signal the others to start screaming.
After I fell, I clutched my abdomen and begged for help.
Mark, however, just waved me off impatiently, telling me not to ruin the celebration.
With her back to me as I lay in a pool of my own blood, Linda hugged Jude and laughed, “See? Bonus Mom loves you so much.”
Linda suddenly collapsed, her sobs ragged and broken.
Mark stared at the cold, callous version of himself on the screen, then raised a hand and slapped himself hard across the face.
“It was me… I killed my own grandchild.”
“Stop watching!”
Cassidy yanked the power cord from the computer.
The screen went black. Crying, she grabbed for Evan’s hand.
“I only wanted to test how much she loved Jude! I was afraid she’d take you all away from me. I was afraid this family wouldn’t have a place for me anymore!”
Evan pulled his hand away and finally looked up at her.
“Without Mara, you wouldn’t have even had a lead actress for your ‘fun family shows.’”
“She was afraid Jude would be caught in the middle, so she let you cross the line again and again. She wanted to keep the peace, so even after you humiliated her, she still helped you pass it off as a joke.”
His voice grew hoarse.
“She wasn’t easy to bully. She just wanted so badly to be one of us.”
Evan looked at his parents, collapsed on the floor, then at his own reflection in the dead screen.
“You used her kindness because you knew how much she wanted to belong to this family.”
“And we were the ones who handed you the knife.”
