Linda choked out, “We were tricked by Cassidy, too…”
“But you were the ones who chose to go along with her. Every single time.”
I cut her off.
“You weren’t confused about right and wrong. You saw I was afraid. You saw I was in pain. You knew those jokes were cruel. But Cassidy was entertaining, and she helped you all preserve the facade of a peaceful family, so my pain didn’t matter.”
Linda’s sobbing stopped.
Finally, Evan held out his hand, offering me the wedding ring.
“Mara, can we still—”
“No.”
I didn’t take it.
“The judgment is final. The rest of my life is not your chance at redemption.”
Then I opened my umbrella and walked past them.
This time, there was no one worth turning back for.
After the lawyer persuaded Linda and Mark to leave, Evan remained alone in the rain.
