His 47 Seconds Of Silence Cost Him Everything Chapter 10
The day our divorce was finalized, Portland was drenched in a cold rain.
My lawyer told me Evan had seen my photo on my company’s website and bought a plane ticket that same night. Linda and Mark had followed him here.
When I walked out of the courthouse, I saw the three of them standing at the bottom of the steps.
Evan had lost a lot of weight. Rain soaked his suit, and he was gripping our wedding ring so tightly his knuckles were white.
Linda took two steps toward me, crying, then stopped herself.
“I won’t touch you. Don’t be afraid…” She raised her hands as if to prove she meant no harm. “Mara, we truly know that we were wrong.”
Mark, his eyes red-rimmed, said, “That day at the dock, when you were begging for help, I pushed you aside. I dream about you lying there every single night.”
He slapped himself hard across the face.
“Please, just give me one more chance. Let me be a grandfather.”
I looked at the red handprint blooming on his cheek and felt nothing at all.
“Do you remember the first ‘test’?” I asked. “Cassidy deliberately gave me the wrong address, and you left me waiting alone on the south side of the city for two hours. On April Fool’s Day, you told me Jude had been rushed to the ER. I cried all the way to the hospital while you hid in the parking lot, filming my reaction.”
All three of them went rigid.
