Kill Him Nine Times Chapter 29
The system agreed at once.
I stayed in this world.
Piece by piece, I repaired the life this body had once lost.
And I would decide for myself when to leave.
The year I graduated high school, I got into an Ivy League school with top scores.
The whole school was celebrating.
I slipped away from the crowd and went into an empty classroom.
I took out my phone and dialed the number I had long since memorized.
When the call connected, a young woman’s voice answered.
“Who is this?”
I didn’t answer her question.
I just said, “Don’t worry about who I am. Just listen.”
“You’re planning to study in Europe after high school. In your second year there, your family’s company will run into trouble. Then a system will find you.”
“It’ll force you to become the kind of girl everyone hates, making you grovel to some rich heir you never even cared about.”
“If you want to avoid that, the solution is simple. Don’t let your family’s company collapse. As long as you’re strong enough, the system will have a harder time choosing you.”
“The reason your family falls apart is because you take on a bad real estate project from the DeLuca family. Stay away from it. Leave that problem for the DeLucas. Two years from now, they’ll be the ones going bankrupt.”
“One last thing. Genevieve, stop dieting. You’re so skinny a gust of wind could knock you over. It doesn’t do anything except make you better at starving.”
I hung up.
Just then, my teacher pushed open the classroom door, her face lit up with joy.
“Cosima, come on—everyone’s taking pictures.”
I put my phone away.
“Coming.”
The hallway was full of voices.
I walked toward them.
