I Gave The Prince To My Sister And Found My True Mate Chapter 22
I cut him off. “You should go back and finish your wedding.”
His hand went still.
He looked at the red gown I wore, then at the matching black leather bands on Caleb’s wrist and mine—freshly registered.
They were not a sacred fated-mate mark, nor a bond forced on us by destiny.
They represented only that we had chosen each other, in full clarity and of our own free will.
At last, Lucian understood that I truly had no intention of turning back.
“Why?”
His voice dropped suddenly, sounding exactly as it had beside my coffin in my last life.
“Audrey, give me one more chance.”
I shook my head.
“In our last life, you never gave me one.”
“But in our last life…” Lucian’s eyes grew redder. “After you died, I ended my own life, too. What about that debt? What about the life you owe me?”
I looked at him and suddenly smiled.
“I don’t owe you anything.”
“Whatever feelings and promises were owed in our last life were repaid in full by my death.”
It was as if all the strength had been pulled out of him. Lucian stood there, stunned and unmoving.
I pulled my sleeve free from his grasp and rolled up the window.
Caleb got back into the car and sat beside me. He didn’t press me with questions, and he didn’t look back at Lucian. He only wrapped my hand in his warm palm.
The convoy set off again.
The spring wind was strong, bending the wildflowers just opening along the sides of the road nearly flat.
Suddenly I remembered the day of my wedding in my last life. When Lucian first lifted my veil, there had been a wind like this blowing outside, too.
Back then, I had believed he would be my whole life.
Only now did I understand.
Wind only lingers for a moment.
The one willing to hold my hand and travel the long road beside me—he is home.
