The proctor walked over.
“Forgot your supplies? Do you need a spare set?”
Matteo didn’t seem to hear her. He just shook his head numbly and stared at the empty pouch.
When the test was over, the college counselor approached him.
“Matteo. Why didn’t you fill in your answer sheet for the reading section?”
Matteo said nothing.
Mrs. Romano rushed over and slapped him across the face.
“Son! Say something!”
The counselor just sighed, shook his head, and walked away.
Mrs. Romano stood there in a daze for a moment.
Then, as if possessed, she started scanning the crowd, her eyes wild. When she spotted Krystal near a corner, she lunged.
“You whore! You ruined my son! I’m going to kill you!”
Krystal screamed and stumbled backward as Mrs. Romano began hitting her.
“I didn’t do it!”
“You still dare to deny it? It was you, wasn’t it? You tampered with his things! ”
“You did this on purpose to ruin him! You filthy little bitch!”
The commotion drew a campus security officer, who hurried over and pulled them apart.
Krystal was hysterical with fear. The moment she was free, she turned and ran.
Mrs. Romano clutched Matteo’s arm, her voice hoarse from screaming.
“Son, I’m begging you. You have to finish the rest of the test properly, okay? ”
“If anything else goes wrong, I don’t know how I’ll go on living!”
For the remaining sections, Matteo managed to pull himself together.
But the reading and writing sections were a total loss.
Without those points, the Ivy League schools Mrs. Romano was obsessed with were completely out of reach.
On score release day, the school’s website crawled under the heavy traffic.
