Reborn Rupture Chapter 20
I entered my information, and when the page finally loaded, I saw my score.
1580.
The teacher next to me gasped.
“1580? My God, that’s a Harvard score!”
My parents threw their arms around me.
And for the first time, I let the tears come.
After two lifetimes of struggle, I had finally put myself on the path I’d always wanted.
Across the room, someone was checking Matteo’s score.
“What about Matteo? He was supposed to be one of the top students.”
“Quick, look him up.”
“1150? No way. That’s so low.”
“I heard he left the entire reading section blank because his girlfriend messed with his pencils.”
“He threw away his future for a girl. What was he thinking?”
Matteo stood frozen in front of the computer, his face as white as a sheet.
Mrs. Romano pushed her way through the crowd.
“How much? What did he get?”
No one answered her.
She leaned in to see the screen for herself, staring at it for a long time before muttering, “Eleven hundred and something… ”
“what kind of school can he get into with that?”
The college counselor shook his head grimly.
“The Ivy League and top public universities are out of the question. ”
“Some of the less competitive state schools might still be a possibility.”
Mrs. Romano swayed on her feet and collapsed to the floor.
The room erupted into chaos.
I stood on the edge of the crowd, a grim, humorless smile on my face.
My parents put their arms around my shoulders.
“Come on,” my dad said. “Let’s go celebrate.”
That night, we had just gotten home when the doorbell rang.
Mrs. Romano stood on our porch, her arms laden with shopping bags.
“Virginia, congratulations! Such a wonderful score!”
My mother blocked the doorway, not letting her in.
“What do you want?”
“Oh, I just came to talk about the children.”
