He Gave My Ring To Her Now He Wears His Regret Chapter 12
Over the next week, Nico searched every place I might have gone.
No one knew where I was.
The messages he sent slowly shifted from commands to pleas.
> Virginia, come back.
> I can apologize for the game.
> We can redo the wedding.
> That ring wasn’t for Alessia.
> She gave it back.
> If you come back, you’ll be included in everything from now on.
He stared at that last sentence for a long time, the absurdity of it washing over him.
I had always been there.
They just had never truly counted me in.
Now that I was gone, he was finally promising me a place.
None of his messages received a reply.
On the eighth day, Alessia came to his apartment.
She placed the engagement ring on the table, her eyes red and swollen.
“Nico, we’re the ones who should be together, aren’t we?”
“Before Virginia, you were in love with me for years.”
Nico just looked at the ring on the table.
“And? She’s gone now.”
Alessia’s voice trembled.
“We can start over.”
“The five of us. We can go back to the way we were.”
The way they were.
Before me.
The five of them, together, with no one to be jealous of, no outsider to pretend to accept.
It was what they had wanted all along.
But the image that rose in Nico’s mind was of me, sitting alone in the corner of a restaurant.
Me, standing just outside the frame of a photograph.
Me, dragging my suitcase away, all by myself.
For the first time, he realized that I wasn’t some intruder who had barged into their lives.
I was the person he had brought in himself.
And he was the one who had promised to protect me.
