He Gave My Ring To Her Now He Wears His Regret Chapter 15
I smiled, a small, sad smile.
“You still think that was just a game?”
“Seven blank cards. The sofa bed. Being left alone on the boat. You putting my ring on her hand, letting her wear my dress, letting her kiss my fiancé.”
“In your eyes, all of that was just a game?”
“And what about the seven years before that?”
I kept going, my voice steady.
“The five of you kept me on the outside the entire time.”
“Every time I was hurt, you told me I was being too sensitive.”
“I twisted myself into knots trying to fit in.”
“And in the end, you all decided I was the intruder who had pushed her way in.”
“It wasn’t the game that made me leave.”
“It was the game that finally made me see things clearly.”
“You never really chose me.”
Nico’s lips parted, but no words came out.
I looked at him, my voice even.
“It’s true—you were going to marry me.”
“But your heart was never with me.”
“Your attention was always on Alessia, on that group.”
“You left me with the wedding planning and the job of taking care of you.”
“You chose me because I was convenient, didn’t you?”
Nico’s face went white.
He really had said those words before.
One woman for love, another for marriage.
He had thought I hadn’t heard him.
“Virginia, I was drunk that day.”
“But you were telling the truth.”
I went on.
“It’s not that you don’t know how to care about someone’s feelings.”
“You just knew that I would always be the one to give in.”
He stood there, his shoulders slowly slumping in defeat.
After a long moment, he pulled the plain gold band from his pocket.
“I looked everywhere for this. The airport staff said you’d left it at the lost and found.”
“Let’s start over.”
“This time, I’ll handle the ring, the wedding, everything.”
I didn’t take it.
For the first time, I heard a note of panic in his voice.
“Virginia, just tell me what to do.”
“If you come back, I’ll change. I’ll do anything.”
