He picked up on the first ring.
“Rafael.” I fought to keep my voice steady. “What right do you have to give Margot my mother’s bracelet? That belongs to me.”
There was a pause.
Then he said, “Helena, it’s just a bracelet.”
“Margot likes it, so let her have it for now. I’ll buy you any bracelet you want later.”
“She likes it, so I have to give her everything that’s mine?” I cut him off. “The shoes. The bracelet. My fiancé. Now even my wedding. You’re sending me to the Hawthorne family in her place.”
Silence.
Two seconds later, he asked in a low voice, “You know?”
“Yes. I know everything.”
Rafael sighed.
“Helena, the old man at the Hawthorne estate is ninety. He’s not going to do anything to you. You just have to go through with the ceremony.”
“Margot saved my life. She’s still so young. I can’t just stand by and watch her get forced into a marriage like that.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
