After leaving the cemetery, Rafael returned to the hospital.
Margot was awake, sitting on the bed and crying.
The moment she saw him, she held out her hand.
“Rafael, you’re finally back. I thought you’d abandoned me.”
“My family is finished. If you don’t help me, my father is really going to sell me off to some other man.”
“He won’t.” Rafael walked over and patted her back. “I won’t let that happen.”
Just then, a nurse came in.
“Bed three, Margot Bennett. Time for your check-up.”
Margot was taken to an exam room.
After the examination, Rafael took the results to the doctor.
When he got to the office, he asked casually, “Doctor, my fiancée donated a kidney a few years ago. Will this accident have any effect on her kidney function?”
The doctor blinked.
“Donated a kidney?”
“Yes.”
The doctor looked down and scanned the report again.
“According to this, the patient has two healthy, fully functioning kidneys. There’s no record of a nephrectomy.”
Rafael thought he’d misheard.
“What did you say?”
The doctor looked up at him.
“I said this patient has never had a kidney removed.”
The color drained from Rafael’s face.
