The Wedding Game That Cost Him Everything Chapter 27
After we hung up, I wrote the statement as requested, checked every page, and sent it to the secure archive of the three-party committee.
By the time I finished, it was already dark.
Peace had fallen asleep curled against my leg, still clutching the bottle of nail polish she hadn’t screwed shut.
Chloe tucked a blanket over her.
“If Tucker knew, he’d definitely say it was all Sloane’s fault again.”
I closed my laptop.
“This time, he doesn’t get to decide that.”
The reopened inquiry was scheduled for a week later.
Neither Sierra nor I went to the United States.
She sat in one video feed, a cane resting beside her prosthetic leg.
Tucker and Sloane were not placed in the same room.
On the other side of the screen sat the three Family heads and their advisers.
There was no judge here. Testimony entered into internal records was enough to change who got protection, seats, and rights of redress.
After the fall, Tucker was paralyzed.
Sloane had lost a leg, and her mental state was still unstable.
But the moment the video began to play, she recognized her own voice.
“Turn it off!”
She lunged at the screen, only to be forced back down by guards.
In the video, she was still wearing that torn wedding dress.
“Before, when I hit the woman before you with my car and crippled her, you didn’t say a word either, did you?”
That line was played twice.
Sloane screamed at first, then laughed.
“I was already mentally unwell then. How can anything I said count?”
Sierra didn’t move.
She only looked at Sloane.
“When you hit me, were you mentally unwell then, too?”
“Why was she standing there?” Sloane shot back without thinking. “I honked. She didn’t get out of the way.”
The room fell silent.
Even the guards behind her froze for a beat.
Realizing what she had just said, Sloane immediately tried to backtrack.
“I don’t remember. Tucker told me that.”
She began trying to dump everything on Tucker.
“He was the one who didn’t want to be with Sierra.”
“He knew I was going to scare her, and he didn’t stop me.”
“Afterward, he was the one who claimed Sierra ran in front of the car herself. Why are you all only staring at me?”
