After I Saved Him My CEO Said We Were Strangers Chapter 06
Reed Blake sat in a booth at a dimly lit SoHo bar, turning a diamond ring over and over in his hand.
The facets caught the low light, flashing between his fingers.
His friend Chris slid into the booth beside him and nodded at the ring.
“What, finally thinking about proposing?”
Reed didn’t answer. He just closed his fist around the ring.
Chris snorted.
“Then how come I heard you gave the director spot and that big resort project to Sophia? Your girl quit in a rage and is basically gone.”
Reed frowned and took a long swallow of his drink.
“It was one of the terms I negotiated with the Suttons.”
“I shepherd Sophia through two major projects, help burnish her résumé. In return, her parents drop the whole marriage-alliance talk for good.”
He rubbed the bridge of his nose, a flicker of exhaustion crossing his face.
“Blair is really furious this time. She won’t listen to a word I say right now.”
Chris stared at him.
“Even so, you handled it like an idiot. The woman took a steel beam for you—she almost died. Then you turn around and pull this? Of course she’s going to assume the worst.”
Reed set his glass down hard on the table, his voice turning sharp.
“What the hell do you know?”
“The second she ran and pushed me, I was terrified.”
“I drilled her on site-safety protocols, and she forgot every single one. Then she wakes up, smiles, and pretends to have amnesia. How was I not supposed to be angry?”
He paused.
“The doctor said she needed to rest, no strenuous mental activity. What project couldn’t wait?”
He lowered his gaze to the amber liquid in his glass.
“As for the director position…”
“I’d hand her this whole company if she wanted it. Whatever she wants, I’d never stand in her way.”
