After I Saved Him My CEO Said We Were Strangers Chapter 15
My best friends stayed with me for ten days.
We drove from California to Oregon, then all the way up to Seattle.
The day they flew home, Nora hugged me at the airport and cried so hard she couldn’t speak.
Tessa didn’t cry. She just kept repeating, “Text me every day. Don’t make me worry.”
After they left, I slung my backpack over my shoulder and started making my way east, alone.
Denver, Austin, New Orleans, Nashville.
I stayed in each city for three to five days.
I slept until I woke up naturally.
I ate at small, local restaurants.
I sat on park benches in the sun and let my mind go blank.
Honestly, I probably owed Reed a thank you.
He had been a generous boss.
He was never stingy with bonuses.
And during the two years we were together, he had covered most of my living expenses and bought me more clothes, bags, and skincare than I could ever use.
I had saved nearly all of it.
So when I spent the better part of a year wandering the country, I never once felt any financial pressure.
When I thought about it, even though our ending was a disaster, I had never truly blamed him.
Half a year later, I settled in Los Angeles.
I took a job at a major corporation. The position was a perfect fit, and the salary was excellent.
On the day of my interview, the department head looked at my résumé and paused.
“You used to work at Blake Group?”
“The people who come out of there usually have very solid fundamentals.”
I just smiled and let the comment pass.
In my third year at the company, a multi-state project I led won the group’s annual innovation award.
In my fourth year, I was promoted to senior manager, in charge of a team of twelve.
