I picked up the signed agreement and stood up to leave.
Evan called out behind me.
“Claire, is there anything I can still do for her?”
My hand rested on the doorknob. I didn’t turn around.
“No.”
After that, there was only silence.
Over the next few months, the court rulings came down one by one.
The judge granted me sole custody of Maisie.
The eighteen thousand dollars Evan had transferred to Brooke was ruled an improper diversion of marital assets and had to be returned in full.
Brooke was charged with fraud and several related offenses. The lies and tears she had used to manipulate everyone became evidence against her.
Evan paid a price for abandoning Maisie, too.
Community service.
Mandatory parenting classes.
And the soccer team he cared so much about issued a public statement permanently removing him as a coach.
The man once celebrated as a hero could no longer even get through the gates of the practice field.
But by the time I heard that news, I no longer cared.
Maisie and I moved into our second-floor apartment.
One night, a loud clap of thunder woke me.
I heard soft footsteps in the hall.
Maisie was standing in my doorway, barefoot, hugging a pillow. She hadn’t put on her shoes. She wasn’t carrying the emergency bag with the flashlight and snacks.
In a small voice, she said,
“Mom, it’s thundering. I’m a little scared.”
Tears sprang to my eyes.
Before, every time it rained, she would get dressed and ready to run, all in silence.
