He Left Our Daughter To Drown But I Saved The Footage Chapter 15
Brooke had hinted to both Evan and her ex-husband that Sadie might be their child, leveraging their guilt for money.
Even after the test results came back and Evan knew for a fact that he had no biological connection to Sadie, he didn’t walk away.
“I thought if I just gave more, eventually they would need me,” he confessed.
So he sent more money, paid her tuition, and forced his way into a family that was never his.
On the day of our divorce mediation, he looked defeated as he slid an agreement across the table.
“I don’t want anything,” he said. “I just want to keep minimum supervised visitation rights.”
I didn’t touch the papers.
“The property will be divided according to the law. As for the money you transferred to Brooke, I will be recovering my half.”
At the same time, my lawyer submitted the child psychologist’s official report.
It recommended suspending all visitation for one year to allow Maisie’s trauma to begin to heal.
Evan sat in silence for a long time.
In the end, he signed everything.
After he scribbled his last signature, he looked up at me.
“Does she still have nightmares?”
“You’re asking too late.”
His hand stilled on the paper.
A few seconds later, his eyes met mine.
“Claire… that day… I could have gone back.”
I looked at him, waiting.
“After I got them to the hotel, I got the second storm alert. I knew the flood risk in our neighborhood was over eighty percent.”
“But Brooke said we could finally have a quiet night together.”
His voice dropped, thick with shame.
“So I turned off my phone. And I stayed.”
He knew Maisie was home alone.
He hadn’t forgotten.
He hadn’t been unable to return.
He had simply, with full knowledge of the consequences, chosen someone else.
I looked at him, and strangely, the last vestiges of hatred inside me began to fade.
“Thank you for finally telling the truth.”
“Now I don’t have to waste any more energy hating you.”
