“That… that was a private loan. It has nothing to do with this.”
“Whether it has anything to do with this will be for the school’s ethics committee and the IRS to determine.”
My mother closed her briefcase.
“I just happened to notice the timing. Spencer’s father transferred money to you.”
“Ten days later, you announced at a schoolwide assembly that a very important competition spot would be transferred to Spencer.”
“The timing makes that a very difficult coincidence to believe.”
Holloway could barely stay on her feet.
There wasn’t a trace of color left in Veronica’s face.
She finally understood.
Holloway hadn’t been helping her at all.
She had just been a pawn.
“Aunt Jane…” Veronica’s voice shook. “You took money from the Suttons?”
Holloway didn’t answer.
She just stared at the transfer record on the desk.
The principal’s expression had grown thunderous.
A representative from the state board of education was sitting across from him, and an investigative reporter’s camera was pointed at his office.
On top of that, the school’s accreditation review was next month.
If this got out, the consequences would be catastrophic.
“Principal Foster.”
My father spoke.
“I won’t make the school’s decisions for it. But what happened today is no longer a simple conflict between students.”
