Speak Up Chapter 09
Holloway’s face was a grim mask.
She shot to her feet, her voice tight.

“Holloway.”
My father finally looked directly at her.
Her words died in her throat.
“You are the Director of Student Affairs, responsible for school discipline.”
“Your niece serves as student council vice president, a system under your authority, and you failed to recuse yourself.”
“She made an accusation against a student, and without verifying a single piece of evidence, you immediately suspended that student and revoked her competition spot.”
“Were you doing your job, or were you using the school’s authority to help a family member settle a score with a classmate?”
Holloway’s lips moved, but no sound came out.
My mother took over, her tone calm and measured.
“Director Holloway, I have one more question regarding the transfer of the competition spot to Spencer Sutton.”
She took a photocopy of a bank transfer record from her briefcase.
“This is a transfer from a company under Spencer Sutton’s father’s name.”
“Two weeks ago, this company transferred twenty-five thousand dollars to a private account.”
She placed the paper on the desk and tapped the recipient’s name with her finger.
“Recipient: Jane Holloway.”
Everyone in the room went rigid.
When Holloway spoke, her voice trembled.
