He Called Me A Stone And Chose Her Pearl Chapter 06
The next day, I told my mother I was going to visit Sophie’s one-year-old daughter.
I chose a pale yellow dress, the color bright but the cut simple.
For a moment, I stared at my reflection, feeling disoriented.
Even the housekeeper paused.
“You rarely wear bright colors, Miss Laurel. From the back, I almost thought you were Miss Vanessa.”
I gave a bitter, silent laugh.
Vanessa loved vivid colors and never allowed me to wear anything similar. If anyone ever remarked on our resemblance, she would fly into a rage.
Over time, my wardrobe had been whittled down to gray, white, and navy blue.
But today was a formal meeting. I wanted to show the man some respect.
The drive to Sophie’s took us past Aster Library. I still had two overdue books, so I asked the driver to stop for a few minutes.
I probably wouldn’t be coming back here.
The old-books reading room was cool and quiet. The aisles between the towering shelves were empty, and there were no cameras angled to see the pages of the books.
I had just placed the books on the return cart when a pair of arms wrapped around me from behind, a hand covering my eyes.
“Guess who?” a familiar, laughing voice said.
My entire body went rigid.
Nolan.
His scent enveloped me, and I grabbed at his hand, trying to push him away.
He thought I was playing along and held on tighter.
I stumbled, and he caught me, pulling me against him. Before I could react, he pressed a quick kiss to my cheek.
I froze.
Shock, anger, and humiliation crashed over me. My heart hammered against my ribs, so hard I thought it might break free.
Nolan chuckled, tapping my nose with his finger.
“What’s wrong? You’re the one who kissed me first last time.”
I wrenched myself backward.
“You have the wrong person. I’m not—”
A sharp cry came from the doorway.
“Laurel! What are you doing?”
